Recalling what guided their decisions, Nidhi shared a line that has now become central to the film’s philosophy: “You think you’re choosing, you think you’re casting, but you’re not. The heroes sitting up in heaven choose who gets into their footsteps, who’s going to be wearing their shoes and walking that path.” In another moment, she phrased it as, “It’s the heroes sitting in heaven that choose who get to walk in their footsteps.”

The statement reflects a deep reverence for the real-life soldiers whose stories inspire Border 2. The sequel carries forward the legacy of J. P. Dutta’s 1997 war epic Border, which was based on the 1971 India-Pakistan war and became one of the most iconic patriotic films in Hindi cinema.

For Nidhi, the idea of “heroes in heaven” choosing the cast is not just poetic imagery — it stems from the larger philosophy with which the film has been mounted. She repeatedly emphasised that her father’s filmmaking was rooted in integrity rather than commerce. “His intention of making a certain film has been extremely pure. It was never commercial… it’s always been the intention of filmmaking. That’s what I take away from it and I hope that others do too,” she said, underlining that the purpose of Border 2 is tribute, not trade.

The emotional responsibility, she admitted, weighed heavily on her shoulders. “I was not only a nervous producer, but I was also a bag of nerves because I’m like any other daughter. I think in any profession when you are trying to carry forward a legacy of your parent, there’s definitely a sense of nervousness, responsibility and you just want to make sure you don’t let them down.”

That sense of duty extended beyond family — it included the armed forces and their families. Recalling her father’s uncompromising stance on authenticity in war films, she shared his words: “I don’t know what face I will show to the families of the armed forces that I’ve based this film on. They are going to go to the theatre wanting to see their loved ones on screen and I can’t do that.” The remark underscores the emotional accountability the Duttas feel toward the real soldiers whose lives form the backbone of the story.

Interestingly, Nidhi also suggested that destiny plays a role in creative collaborations. “I think some films choose right. The film chooses the director. Yeah. Sometimes the film chooses the director. So, I think Border 2 had decided that they would get Anurag,” she said, extending the idea of higher purpose beyond casting to the film’s overall journey.
