Actor Suriya is currently enjoying the massive success of Karuppu, which has emerged as one of his biggest commercial hits in recent years. After a series of underwhelming releases like Kanguva and Retro, the fantasy action drama has struck a chord with audiences and is witnessing packed theatres and strong fan celebrations across regions. Co-starring Trisha Krishnan, the film has especially been praised for presenting Suriya in a larger-than-life avatar that has thrilled fans.

At the same time, Karuppu has also sparked discussions among audiences and critics, with some claiming that the film may not rank among Suriya’s strongest performance-driven works. Addressing the balance between compelling storytelling and commercial success, actor Jyotika shared her thoughts during an appearance on the YouTube show 60 Minutes With Sudhir.

When the host compared the fan frenzy surrounding Karuppu to the celebrations witnessed during Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, and pointed out that the film may not necessarily be considered one of Suriya’s most performance-heavy roles, Jyotika responded by emphasizing the importance of box office success for actors and filmmakers alike. “We’re very overwhelmed. Suriya loves telling good stories, and he always makes sure there’s a story in every film. But the box office numbers are also required, I think, for the heroes. Or for actors, any actor, any budget. No one’s here to be at a loss. So, it’s very important for them also to churn out the numbers,” she said.

Jyotika further defended the film’s storytelling, insisting that Karuppu is much more than a routine commercial entertainer. “Definitely, it’s very overwhelming. And if you see Karuppu, along with being an absolute fan and commercial film, there’s a story going on. He’s playing a God, and there’s something to the script,” she added.

Calling the film emotionally rooted despite its mass appeal, the actress continued, “It’s not just one of the run-of-the-mill commercial films. It has its own soul. It’s just been put across differently for the masses to see. But the last ten minutes of the film, I mean, Suriya’s really performed brilliantly. We’re so overwhelmed and so happy with the love. It’s a celebration at home.”

Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu is a fantasy action drama produced by Dream Warrior Pictures. The film also stars RJ Balaji alongside Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Sshivada, and Supreeth Reddy. The story follows guardian deity Vettai Karuppu, who disguises himself as a lawyer to battle corruption within the judicial system while helping a young girl awaiting a liver transplant. Released worldwide on May 15, 2026, the film continues to perform strongly at the box office.
