Time to meet the Rogue Trooper! Finally –after years and years in development, it’s getting close to being finished. UK comic book company 2000 A.D. has debuted a first look teaser trailer for the Rogue Trooper movie, a 3D animated feature written and directed by the sci-fi filmmaker Duncan Jones (his latest since Mute in 2018). This version is not live action, it’s an animated feature made entirely with Unreal Engine 5. Producer Stuart Fenegan explains in an interview via Deadline why it has taken so long: “figuring out a new way of making a CG movie takes a while.” Based on the sci-fi strip in the British comic 2000 A.D., it follows the adventures of Rogue (starring Aneurin Barnard), a genetically engineered, blue-skinned super-soldier and his three comrades’ search for the Traitor General. His buddies KIA have their personalities storied in his gun, backpack, and helmet as he goes to find out who sold them out. Also starring Hayley Atwell, Jack Lowden, Daryl McCormack, Reece Shearsmith, Diane Morgan, Alice Lowe, Asa Butterfield, and Sean Bean. Only a very quick first look at any footage while we wait for updates. I’m ready to watch more.
Here’s the first look teaser trailer for Duncan Jones’ movie Rogue Trooper, direct from YouTube:
“Rogue Trooper was always the one that felt most appealing to me. It’s funny, when I was in school, I was a big fan of Plato’s Republic and the tripartite division of the soul between the head, the stomach, and the heart. And I always read Rogue Trooper thinking of that division of the soul, with the characters of Bagman, Gunnar and Helm. And when we started making the film, I finally had the opportunity to talk to the authors and ask them if that had been in their thinking. Obviously, it wasn’t. [Laughs.] It wasn’t at all! but it meant something to me.” –Writer / Director Duncan Jones (via Deadline)

Go Rogue! Starring Aneurin Barnard, Rogue Trooper tells the story of 19, a “Genetic Infantryman”, who finds himself the sole-survivor of an invasion force. Desperate to track down the traitor who sold him and his comrades out, the super soldier is accompanied by 3 killed-in-action squad mates, whose personalities have been stored in his gun – Gunnar (voiced by Jack Lowden), helmet – Helm (Daryl McCormack), and backpack –Bagman (Reece Shearsmith). Rogue Trooper is written and directed by British genre filmmaker Duncan Jones, director of the movies Moon, Source Code, Warcraft, and Mute previously, plus other projects. Adapted from the comic strip series of the same name in 2000 A.D. created by Gerry Finley-Day & Dave Gibbons. Made by Rebellion and Liberty Films. Produced by Stuart Fenegan, Jason Kingsley, Chris Kingsley, Duncan Jones. No release date is set yet – still seeking distribution. For more visit the official site.
