Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali recently spoke about the kind of emotional depth he looks for in actors while discussing his upcoming film Main Vaapas Aaunga. During a recent interaction, the director reflected on how some young performers bring an unexpected level of maturity to their roles, drawing a comparison between Vedang Raina’s performance in the film and Alia Bhatt’s work in Highway.

Speaking about emotionally layered performances by younger actors, Imtiaz Ali said, “You know, Alia Bhatt in Highway or Vedang Raina in this film (Main Vaapas Aaunga) have portrayed certain depth of emotion. Some newcomers unexpectedly do that. There is a certain maturity that these people possess.”

The filmmaker, who is known for extracting nuanced performances from his actors, also shared his perspective on acting and casting. According to him, acting is deeply individualistic and cannot always be measured by experience alone.

“I have an individualistic take on actors,” Imtiaz said, adding, “So, I feel that actors are very individualistic. They never become veterans. They always remain the same.”

His comments have drawn attention online, especially as Vedang Raina continues to emerge as one of the promising young actors in the industry. Vedang, who made his acting debut with The Archies, will next be seen in Main Vaapas Aaunga, which is set against the backdrop of the Partition.

The film features an ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari and Vedang Raina. Main Vaapas Aaunga is described as a story of love, separation and longing during one of the most turbulent periods in Indian history.

Main Vaapas Aaunga is scheduled to release in theatres on June 12.
