Lee Pace discusses Invincible Season 4 ending
Lee Pace has addressed the ending of Invincible Season 4, offering insight into Thragg’s unexpected approach in the final moments. Rather than escalating into another large-scale battle that destroys Earth, the Viltrumite leader offered a new proposal to Mark, saying that he and other Viltrumites would hide in plain sight on Earth. They’d live and rebuild their lost population by breeding on Earth, similar to what Nolan achieved with Mark.
Discussing the scene in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pace highlighted the underlying tension between the two characters. “There’s a measure of respect in it, and I think there’s a measure of, ‘You’re here, I’m here. You’re gonna have to deal with that, and I’m gonna have to deal with you, but I can’t kill you yet, and you can’t kill me, period.”
The actor further explained that Thragg’s decision to confront Mark directly reflects a strategic choice, adding, “He’s saying, ‘I rate you as a powerful, significant person. You could be the hero of this story.’ So I’m gonna look at you dead in the eye and see what you’re made of and see what you do with this.’”
Mark had returned to Earth completely tense following his earlier battle against Thragg. He dealt with massive trauma to the extent that he was hallucinating, seeing Thragg kill everyone he loved one by one. Then, when the Viltrumite finally appeared before him, he was left with an offer he just couldn’t refuse.
Rejecting Thragg’s truce offer would have led to another immediate conflict that Earth wasn’t ready for. It would have likely resulted in the destruction of the entire planet, including all life on it.
Meanwhile, accepting it would allow the Viltrumites to live among humans without detection and put Earth and several planets in danger years down the line. So, among the two, Mark agreed to Thragg’s terms to prevent immediate destruction and lived to fight another day.
Now, it’ll be interesting to see if Invincible Season 5 will bring the Viltrumites to the limelight again.
