Bollywood actor and MP Kangana Ranaut has publicly responded to remarks made by composer AR Rahman, claiming he refused to meet her and declined involvement in her film Emergency on the grounds that it was a “propaganda film.” The comment from Kangana adds another dimension to the ongoing discussion sparked by Rahman’s recent critique of the historical drama Chhaava.

Kangana Ranaut calls AR Rahman “prejudiced and hateful” after his remark labelling Chhaava “divisive”: “You are blinded by your hate”
Taking to her Instagram Stories on Saturday, Kangana shared a screenshot of Rahman’s interview with BBC Asian Network and wrote directly to the composer. “Dear @arrahman ji, I face so much prejudice and partiality in the film industry because I support a saffron party yet I must say I have not come across a man more prejudiced and hateful than you,” she said.
Kangana also said she had hoped to discuss Emergency with Rahman and even narrate the film’s story to him. “I desperately wanted to narrate my directorial Emergency to you. Forget narration, you even refused to meet me. I was told you don’t want to be part of a propaganda film,” she wrote.
Emergency, which stars Kangana as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, focuses on the 1975-77 period in Indian history when a nationwide state of emergency was declared — a subject that has already generated substantial public debate and political commentary since its release. The film showcased seasoned actors such as Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade and Milind Soman.

Kangana acknowledged that Emergency received mixed reactions, noting that while some critics and even political figures praised the film’s approach, she believes Rahman’s reservations stem from prejudice. “Ironically, Emergency was called a masterpiece by all critics. Even opposition party leaders sent me fan letters appreciating the film for its balanced and compassionate approach, but you are blinded by your hate. I feel sorry for you,” she added.
Rahman’s remarks that prompted this response came in the context of his comments on Chhaava, a film centred on historical events. Rahman described Chhaava as “divisive,” saying it “cashed in on divisiveness” while also acknowledging its core theme of bravery.
