Kriti Sanon has spoken candidly about the gender biases that continue to exist in the film industry, sharing her personal experiences of unequal treatment and pay disparity in a recent interview with GQ India. The actress, who has often advocated for gender parity in cinema, reflected on the subtle yet persistent ways patriarchy still shapes working environments in Bollywood.

Kriti Sanon says patriarchy is still deeply ingrained in the film industry; recalls male co-star getting “better car”
During the conversation, Kriti revealed that financial negotiations in films frequently affect actresses more than their male counterparts. She explained that when producers look to reduce costs, the female lead’s remuneration often becomes the first area where compromises are expected.
“There’s been some struggle around money. When they [producers] have to cut corners, they often negotiate down the female lead’s fee, even though a large chunk of the budget goes to the male actor,” Kriti said.
The actress further noted that these issues are rooted in long-standing industry practices and social conditioning. According to her, patriarchy continues to influence decision-making on film sets, sometimes in ways people may not even consciously realise.
“Patriarchy is still deeply ingrained in the industry, and we have to keep shaking things up to move towards equality,” she shared.
Kriti also highlighted how unequal treatment can appear in seemingly minor situations during shoots. She recalled instances where film crews prioritised ensuring that the female actor was ready first so that the male actor would not have to wait. While such behaviour may appear routine, Kriti believes it reflects deeper subconscious biases.
“It’s subconscious, but it needs to change,” she added.
Sharing another early career experience, Kriti remembered a moment when a male co-star, who was not senior to her, received better on-set facilities. She clarified that the issue was not materialistic but symbolic of the respect and importance assigned to actors based on gender.
“I remember small things, like a male co-star, who wasn’t a senior, getting a better car. Of course, it wasn’t about the car, but about being respected equally,” she said.
The actress is currently busy with the promotions of Cocktail 2, which is scheduled to release on June 19, 2026.
