Mike Myers, who played the titular character in the Shrek series, had an extremely wholesome way of celebrating Eddie Murphy. He received the AFI Life Achievement Award on April 18, 2026. Myers showed up styled as Shrek. With green makeup and ogre ears, he paid tribute to the iconic film franchise where he starred alongside Murphy.
Myers spoke about Murphy and praised his role as Donkey in the Shrek franchise. Myers said (via a clip from Reddit), “None of Shrek’s success could have happened without Eddie Murphy.” He added, “Eddie’s character, Donkey, is a masterpiece, as is every character Eddie has created over the years.”
“Lovable, hilarious, joyous, vulnerable, and loyal. Eddie combines all of those in a tour de force, and plainly put, Eddie is one of the greatest,” Myers continued. He noted that he did not get an opportunity to work with legends like Charlie Chaplin, Alec Guinness, and Peter Sellers, but believes that working with Murphy was an equal honor. “It is my absolute honor to say and to be able to tell my kids that I got to work with Eddie Murphy,” he added.
The ceremony also had other big stars like Martin Lawrence, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Arsenio Hall, Judge Reinhold, Jennifer Hudson, and Kenan Thompson, addressing Murphy’s win.
The award was eventually presented to him by Spike Lee.
Murphy cracked a few jokes while receiving the award. “If you made me wait until I was 92, I would’ve come out here and said f*** everybody… and then I’d get down and shit on the floor,” the actor said, “We staved off that happening by getting this award tonight.”
On a more serious note, the actor added, “Seeing all of my family, all my kids, my beautiful wife, and seeing all the different people I worked with, I’m just really filled up…This is a special moment. I wish y’all could feel what I’m feeling, see what I’m seeing. I almost teared up. I’m going to get backstage and cry.”
