With concerts live-streamed in cinemas as part of your regular scheduling, and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour movie grossing $260 million at the worldwide box-office, studios and exhibitors are keen to get more music on screen in order to secure more bums on seats, or out of them in the case of (deep breath) Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D).
The hook here is enlisting Avatar auteur James Cameron and his giant camera, a contraption which makes him look like his own Terminator 2 cyborg pursuing the pop star as she prepares for the final show of her year-long tour. He asks her the occasional question, which only really yields any results during the film’s encore, but is largely, and perhaps frustratingly peripheral to proceedings. But as he says himself, this is directed by Billie Eilish, with his name in much smaller writing below.
And he’s right, because beyond the 3D gimmick and his penchant for boundary pushing visuals, the real star of the show is just a girl with a mic.
Anyone who has seen Eilish perform live knows that this is what she was made for. An artist able to convey enormous empathy, vulnerability, and attitude, all without the need for fifteen outfit changes or body-popping backing dancers. And the fact I used ‘body-popping’ tells you that I’m not the target demographic here, but have been listening to ‘This is Billie Eilish’ since the end credits rolled.
The movie reflects this no-frills approach; the staging is relatively basic, with the odd burst of pyrotechnics, and each song has its own Eilish-selected colour scheme, but aside from that the focus remains solely on the conductor rod performance of the young American.
The behind-the-scenes moments are fleeting, with Eilish meeting some rescue pups or lamenting the absence of her brother and collaborator Finneas. It’s the vox-pops that carry the most weight, with a diverse group of fans expressing why she means so much to them, and the safe space she has afforded them as individuals. Representation, for both the fans and Eilish, is the overriding message of the film.
Aside from the fact that this is a difficult recommendation for anyone unfamiliar with Eilish, there’s very little to talk shit about on the internet when it comes to Hit Me Hard and Soft. That said, the occasional audience reaction shot can be a little jarring or performative, but we’ve all been a fan of something or someone, and they are often just expressions of unbottled emotion, so you quickly forgive that and remind yourself that this is really for them, not you.
With Billie Eilish possessing such a singular don’t avert your eyes energy, her performance feels perfectly suited to such a straightforward concert movie in which the focus is purely on her and the music. As such Hit Me Hard and Soft makes two hours feel like twenty minutes. Add another star if you’re a fan, because you’ll be Happier Than Ever.
