A beloved 2005 sci-fi film starring Nathan Fillion has seen a resurgence on Amazon Prime Video this week. Written and directed by Joss Whedon, the movie Serenity serves as the conclusion of his cancelled space Western series Firefly.

Serenity is among top 10 streaming hit movies on Prime Video
According to FlixPatrol’s May 20 report, Serenity is #10 on Amazon Prime Video’s Top 10 films chart in the United States. Although the film was released over two decades ago, many subscribers have chosen to revisit the underrated sci-fi this week.
Meanwhile, Mason Thames and Mckenna Grace’s romantic drama, Regretting You, is leading the charts. It is followed by Steve Carell’s Despicable Me 4 at # 2, Jack Kesy’s Bang at #3, and Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer and its sequel at #4 and #5, respectively.
Marking his feature directorial debut, Serenity provides a conclusion to Joss Whedon’s canceled Fox series, Firefly. The show originally aired on Fox in September 2002, but the network canceled it after airing only 11 of its 14 episodes due to poor viewership. However, the show eventually garnered a dedicated following, becoming a cult classic. Following its cancellation, Universal Pictures acquired the rights to the property and produced the film.
Serenity was released three years later on September 30, 2005. Despite favorable reviews and positive fan reactions, it ultimately underperformed at the box office. Made on a reported $39 million budget, the film made roughly $40.4 million globally. The film currently holds a 82% critics’ score and a 91% users’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film’s story picks up after the events of Firefly. It follows Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds, played by Fillion, and his crew on the spaceship Serenity. Together, they try to protect a young woman named River Tam, who has extraordinary abilities. With knowledge of deadly secrets, she goes on the run with her brother, Simon, and finds refuge on the Serenity, but they are pursued by a relentless agent known as the Operative who has orders to capture her.
The movie’s supporting cast includes Summer Glau, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, and Ron Glass, among others.
