Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix, is set to leave the company after nearly 29 years. The announcement comes as part of the company’s latest update, confirming that he will step away from his role in June. This brings a close to his nearly 29-year-long tenure at the streaming giant.

Reed Hastings reveals plans to leave Netflix
Reed Hastings is set to step away from Netflix, the company he co-founded and helped build into a global streaming platform. The announcement was made alongside Netflix’s first-quarter earnings report, confirming that Hastings will not stand for re-election to the board at the company’s annual meeting in June, when his current term officially comes to an end.
In his remarks, Hastings reflected on his time at the company, highlighting one of his most significant memories. The executive said, “Netflix changed my life in so many ways, and my all-time favorite memory was January 2016, when we enabled nearly the entire planet to enjoy our service.”
He went on to acknowledge the leadership of Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos. Hastings said, “A special thanks to Greg and Ted, whose commitment to Netflix’s greatness is so strong that I can now focus on new things.” Netflix also confirmed in a regulatory filing that his decision not to seek “re-election is not as a result of any disagreement with the Company.”
Following his departure, Hastings plans to focus on philanthropy and other initiatives. His charitable efforts include donating $1.1 billion to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and helping launch the Hastings Initiative for AI and Humanity at Bowdoin College. In recent years, he has also devoted more time to real estate projects alongside his philanthropic work.
Hastings, who served as the company’s chief executive until 2023 and currently holds the role of chairman, has gradually reduced his involvement in recent years. With his board exit now confirmed, this move will mark the end of his nearly 29-year association with the company, closing a chapter that began when Netflix operated as a DVD rental service before evolving into a dominant force in global entertainment.
