The religious drama Unchosen (formerly known as Out of the Dust) has arrived on Netflix today, April 21, 2026! The official trailer has been released, and we look at the series featuring cast members Molly Windsor, Asa Butterfield, Fra Fee, Siobhan Finneran, and Christopher Eccleston. Unchosen is a Netflix Original psychological thriller series written, created, and executive produced by Julie Gearey. The series is directed by Jim Loach (Criminal Record) and Philippa Langdale (A Discovery of Witches). Double Dutch Productions is the studio behind the series, with executive producers Iona Vrolyk and Myar Craig-Brown, and producer Nick Pitt.

The series went into production in August 2024, with the original cast announced. Filmed in the United Kingdom, the series eventually wrapped by the end of 2024, with a reported budget of approximately £23.7 million to £33.2 million in total, or £3.95 million to £5.53 million per episode.

What is the plot of Unchosen?

The official synopsis for Unchosen reads:

“Rosie lives with her husband Adam and daughter in a cloistered Christian sect. The fateful arrival of escaped prisoner Sam into her life, reveals the reality and restraints of her world; perhaps this hidden religious community doesn’t have her best interests at heart. And, as the cracks begin to appear in her marriage, Sam presents as her saviour. But with his dark criminal past, where does the greatest danger lie – with the cult or with Sam?”

Who are the cast members of Unchosen?

Thanks to recent cast reveals, we now have a much clearer picture of who is playing who in this tight-knit and dangerous community:

Molly Windsor (Three Girls) plays Rosie, whose sheltered life is turned upside down when a stranger saves her daughter from drowning. Enduring abuse from her husband, Rosie is propelled into an affair and a journey of sexual awakening.
Asa Butterfield (Sex Education) plays Adam. Adam is a devout cult follower who puts the fellowship before his family. While he punishes Rosie and gangs up on his brother, privately, Adam is struggling with his sexuality and finds himself intoxicated by his attraction to Sam.
Fra Fee (Hawkeye, Rebel Moon) plays Sam, a highly manipulative escaped convict who was arrested as a teen for a deadly crime. He balances an affair with Rosie and a flirtation with Adam while using coercion to integrate himself into the fellowship.
Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who) plays Mr. Phillips, the leader of the cult. Brought up in the organization and completely indoctrinated, he frequently abuses his position of power and acts inappropriately with female members.
Siobhan Finneran (Downton Abbey, Happy Valley) plays Mrs. Phillips, the cult leader’s wife. She reluctantly turns a blind eye to her husband’s abuse while mourning the loss of a son who left the fellowship.
Olivia Pickering plays Grace, Rosie and Adam’s sensitive and curious deaf daughter who has a close relationship with her parents until she starts to see the darkness in Sam.
Aston McAuley plays Isaac, Adam’s brother. Considered the black sheep of the family, Isaac is shunned and abused by the community simply for having a cell phone.
Alexa Davies plays Hannah, Isaac’s heartbroken and financially strapped wife who punishes her husband by cutting off his contact with their children.
Ethan Davidson plays Mason, Sam’s loyal younger brother who subjects himself to violence at the hands of those angry at his sibling, acting as Sam’s eyes and ears inside the compound.
