Producer Abishek S Vyas has shared his views on the changing landscape of filmmaking, citing the success and impact of Curry Barker’s Obsession as an example of how audience preferences are evolving.

Speaking about the film, Vyas said that projects such as Obsession indicate a shift in what viewers expect from cinema today. According to him, audiences are increasingly engaging with stories that explore complex emotions, psychological themes, and morally layered characters. “Obsession didn’t just change what we watch. It changed how we think about making films,” Vyas said.

He noted that the industry is moving beyond traditional formulas that once dominated mainstream filmmaking. Vyas believes audience interests are becoming more diverse, creating space for unconventional narratives and new creative voices. The producer also spoke about his plans for his production banner, AVS. He revealed that the company intends to produce at least two films and one show every year, with a focus on working with emerging talent. Discussing the company’s approach, Vyas said, “I’m not here to follow the playbook. I’m here to rewrite it.”

According to him, the goal is to support storytellers who bring fresh perspectives rather than relying solely on established formulas. He suggested that many successful projects today are driven by originality and a distinct creative voice. Vyas further argued that changes in audience consumption patterns have altered long-standing industry assumptions about what works commercially. “The old maths of filmmaking is broken and that’s exactly the opportunity,” he said.

He added that lessons from films such as Obsession point toward the growing acceptance of intimate storytelling, bold creative choices, and narratives that do not necessarily follow conventional structures.

Vyas believes this shift presents opportunities for new filmmakers and writers who may have previously struggled to find a platform. Through AVS, he hopes to build a slate of projects that prioritise unique storytelling and encourage creative experimentation.
