Beloved Walking Dead character Beth Greene is returning in season 3 of spin-off series, The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Announced during San Diego Comic-Con, Emily Kinney will reprise her role as her character seemingly comes back from the dead. It has been confirmed that the Dead City episodes featuring Kinney’s Beth take place in an alternate reality.

The episode premieres on Sunday 26 July for those in the US, with Entertainment Weekly offering a first look at her return.

“We’re really glad that Emily wanted to come back and do this,” Lauren Cohan says in a newly shared video, as Kinney adds: “I had no idea I’d get a chance to play Beth again.” Cohan then warned viewers to “get those tissues ready”.

Kinney first made her The Walking Dead debut in season 2 of the hit post-apocalyptic drama, when Rick and other survivors took refuge at a farm run by Hershel and his daughters Maggie and Beth.

Beth became an integral part of the show’s main survivor group, growing from a shy teenager into a confident leader. However, hearts broke across The Walking Dead fandom when Beth was killed in season 5 after being shot in the head.

“I actually have not watched the episode,” Kinney told EW back in 2014 after her final episode aired. “I haven’t sat down and watched it. I feel it’s sort of out of my hands at a certain point and I’m very proud of the work I’ve done with The Walking Dead. I don’t feel like it would be fun to watch myself. It feels a little painful.”

When asked at the time what she’d miss the most, Kinney said: “Probably the people. Because I feel like we’ve all become such good friends and they’ve made me a better actor. Not just the other actors, but all the people I’ve gotten to work with. They’re all really passionate people and really inspire me.

“I feel like Scott Gimple and Robert Kirkman and Gale Anne Hurd and all these people are really great artists and being around them doesn’t just infuse my work on The Walking Dead, but as a songwriter as well. Being around them makes me excited.”

The Walking Dead: Dead City will return to AMC and AMC+ on 26 July. Seasons 1 and 2 are available to watch on Sky and NOW.
