Aimee Lou Wood’s BBC comedy series Film Club is reportedly ending after just one season.
The six-parter, which is co-written by Wood and Ralph Davis and follows Evie (Wood), a young woman who has a breakdown and refuses to leave her mum’s house, except to go to the garage once a week and stage a film club with her best friend Noa (Nabhaan Rizwan), aired its first run back in October.
The series went on to receive positive reviews, and landed Wood a BAFTA TV Award nomination for best actress.
But according to Deadline, Film Club won’t be returning for a second season.
The publication noted that it was a “mutual decision” between Wood and the BBC, with Wood “keen to prioritise other writing”, and the BBC “relaxed to be moving on from the series”.
While the series isn’t wholly autobiographical, Wood previously opened up to Radio Times magazine about how she shares traits with Evie, and how writing the series helped her embrace her neurodivergence.
“When I watched Film Club back, I realised I was telling myself loads of things with the neuro-spiciness,” she said.
She added: “Basically, it’s about a girl who’s working out she’s autistic, and I didn’t know that about myself when I was writing it. It was all subconscious.”
Wood rose to fame as Aimee Gibbs in Sex Education, before landing other roles in the BBC comedy Daddy Issues and Netflix drama Toxic Town. She then rose to new levels of fame for appearing in HBO series The White Lotus – a role which earned her an Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series.
Alongside Wood and Rizwan (Juice), Film Club also stars House of the Dragon’s Ralph Davis, Gentleman Jack’s Suranne Jones and Adolescence’s Owen Cooper.
