“This picture is almost 10 times the size of that stored on a standard 35mm frame.” A BIG visit to IMAX! Time for another 20 minute geek out session with Adam! The Tested YouTube channel has posted a new 20-min video this week taking a tour of the remarkable IMAX headquarters backroom where they dive into understanding their 70mm film projection. Tested’s host Adam Savage makes his way into the LA HQ for IMAX to talk about and get a closer look at 70mm IMAX cinema and how huge and glorious it is. There are a number of major 70mm film IMAX movies hitting theaters this year, which is why 70mm IMAX is getting so much focus. It’s the biggest and most pristine of Large Format projection still around, and IMAX is trying to keep actual 70mm film projectors in operation (mainly in US & Canada) but it’s costly & require this exact level of expert management. This video goes all out doing film prep with a print manager named Irving, who also geeks out with Adam about everything (and btw they’re working on a print for Nolan’s The Odyssey in this). All of it just just makes me wish I was sitting down there about to see whatever they’re about to show.

Thanks to Twitter for the tip on this geeky video. Original intro via YouTube: “Adam Savage went to IMAX’s LA headquarters to tour their vault of 70mm film prints, embed with technicians splicing reels as tall as a person, and visit the projection booth of their in-house theater where directors come to review and sign off on their vision printed in film’s largest format.” Direct from Adam Savage’s Tested YouTube channel. Adam visits the IMAX headquarters for a special behind-the-scenes tour of the 70mm film archive, loading reels, and projection room in their main office. The video is shot and edited by Joey Fameli. We’ve featured tons of other videos from Adam Savage’s Tested channel – including making an original Blade Runner ID badge prop, and How a 100-Year-Old Animated Film is Restored, Visiting Jim Henson’s Archives, geeking out over Fifth Element stuff at PropStore, visiting the Project Hail Mary set. Our most anticipated upcoming movies this year are Nolan’s The Odyssey & Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three. Have you seen movies in IMAX 70mm?
