David Howard Thornton, known for embodying the sadistic harlequin Art the Clown across Damien Leone’s Terrifier films, has become one of modern horror’s most recognizable new icons.

Bringing that same commitment to a real-life question, Thornton proposed to his girlfriend as the grinning menace itself. And when artistry, timing, and emotion collided, they created a moment that felt larger than any screen.
David Howard Thornton proposes to girlfriend as Terrifier’s Art the Clown
The man behind one of horror’s most disturbing icons just made real-life headlines. David Howard Thornton of Terrifier got engaged at the Huntsville Comic and Pop Culture Expo.
In true character, he proposed while in full Art the Clown makeup and costume, the same black-and-white, blood-soaked look that has made audiences squirm in theaters. For once, the horrifying, gut-twisting clown wasn’t chasing victims but sealing a promise with a ring.
David Howard Thornton shared the news on Instagram, confirming his engagement to Jada Christie. “She said yes!” his post read. In the video, the Art portrayer can be seen on one knee as his partner accepted his proposal, and the couple excitedly shared a kiss.
Fans erupted online the moment news of the proposal broke, flooding Thornton’s Instagram comments with an overwhelming response hailing it as a proposal done right. “Proposing as art is f—— crazy. I love it,” wrote a Terrifier enthusiast.
“Well, she knows the consequences of saying no,” joked another. “Looks like Art just took a break from slaughtering just to propose his true love! Congrats, dude!” commented a fan. “Awesome way to propose,” echoed another.
For those unversed, David Howard Thornton first slipped into Art the Clown’s black-and-white greasepaint in 2016’s Terrifier, a low-budget slasher that quickly clawed its way to cult status. The 2022 follow-up, Terrifier 2, stunned both critics and fans, carving out more than $15 million at the box office from a mere $250,000 budget.
Thornton returned to the blood-soaked mime act in 2024 with Terrifier 3, keeping the franchise’s gruesome momentum alive. Director Damien Leone is now writing Terrifier 4, with the script nearing its completion.
