Denmark has been participating in the Eurovision Song Contest for 31 years and has won a total of three times. After failing to qualify for the final in 2024, last year they did make it through but did not score well so the pressure is on for this year’s entrant Søren Torpegaard Lund.

However he seems to be in with a good shot as his song is already hugely successful across streaming platforms, nearly surpassing 6 million streams on Spotify alone. So here’s hoping he can score Denmark its fourth victory.

Søren Torpegaard Lund has been taking part in musical theatre since he was 10 years old. When he was 17 he applied for The Danish National School of Performing Arts and made history as the youngest person ever to be accepted.

He has been working as a professional singer, dancer and actor ever since but only began his solo music career in recent years. Over his career so far he has played Tony in West Side Story, Angel in Kinky Boots and Romeo in Romeo & Juliet.

Three years ago, Lund participated in the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2023, the Danish national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 but was unsuccessful. This year he entered again and won, earning the right to represent Denmark at the international singing competition.

Søren Torpegaard Lund will be performing the Danish language song Før Vi Går Hjem at the Eurovision Song Contest and is about being trapped in a toxic relationship that you can’t walk away from.

It was written by Lund himself alongside Clara Sofie Fabricius, Thomas Meilstrup and Valdemar Littauer Bendixen who also produced. The electro-pop song has quickly become a fan favourite of this year’s competition alongside Finland’s and Australia’s entries.

Where did Denmark come in the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest?

Last year, Denmark finished in 23rd place in the Grand Final of the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest, scoring a total of 47 points with the song Hallucination performed by Sissal.

The Eurovision Song Contest has faced significant criticism over its decision to allow Israel to take part in the event due to the ongoing war in Gaza.

This year, a number of countries will boycott the contest following the European Broadcasting Union’s decision not to expel Israel from the competition.

At the EBU general assembly in December 2025, a vote was held to introduce new rules that would stop governments and third parties from disproportionately promoting songs to influence voters. No vote was held on Israel’s participation.

The EBU said in a statement: “A large majority of members agreed that there was no need for a further vote on participation and that the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 should proceed as planned, with the additional safeguards in place.”

Following this, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Iceland confirmed they would not participate in this year’s Eurovision.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ said: “RTÉ feels that Ireland’s participation remains unconscionable given the appalling loss of lives in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there, which continues to put the lives of so many civilians at risk.”

The BBC, which broadcasts the competition in the UK, has said it supports the decision made by the EBU. “This is about enforcing the rules of the EBU and being inclusive,” it said in a statement.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 final will take place on Saturday 16 May 2026.
