Why Black Widow was Team Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War
Joe and Anthony Russo recently attended a Q&A during which they spoke about why Black Widow was not a part of Team Captain America.
Speaking with CBR‘s Sean O’Connell, Joe said Scarlett Johansson’s character, Black Widow, was initially meant to side with Captain America. He stated, “It would have been obvious that Natasha was on Steve’s side. And in fact, I think in early drafts, she was.”
However, according to him, this decision “wasn’t giving her a strong enough point of view in the movie.” Joe added, “The problem was, I think we felt like she was echoing his (Captain America) point of view. Then we moved her to Team Tony, it was, it amplified her point of view on the film.”
He further explained that Black Widow’s character arc in the early drafts was changed to surprise fans. Sharing the details of what transpired behind the scenes, Joe conveyed, “Ultimately, what we’re looking for at the end of the day is, one, what’s going to be the most surprising. And two, what’s going to generate the most conflict and the richest storytelling.” During the Q&A, the Russos also described Captain America: Civil War as a “10-year emotional investment.” Moreover, Joe spoke about the bond he and Anthony share with fans and added, “We love making these movies. There is a bond that we have with the audience that’s unlike anything you could imagine.”
