Will there be a season 2 of The Wonderfools on Netflix?

Netflix’s latest Korean drama The Wonderfools brings the star and director of Extraordinary Attorney Woo back together for something very different indeed.

Set against the backdrop of the apocalyptic ‘Y2K’ theory at the turn of the millennium, the series explores the fallout when a group of random individuals suddenly gain superpowers – and haphazardly attempt to put them to good use amid a growing crisis.

“People are vanishing without a trace, and an eerie new church is taking hold,” teases the synopsis, “[in] a chilling echo of the horrors the town thought it had long ago buried.”

As we see, the trio take some time to get to grips with their newfound abilities, but is their surprising origin only the beginning of a longer, fantastical journey? Here’s everything we know so far about the future of The Wonderfools on Netflix.

Will there be a season 2 of The Wonderfools on Netflix?

Netflix is yet to state explicitly whether The Wonderfools will return for a second season, but notably, the Korean comedy-drama has been dubbed a “limited series” by the streaming platform.

That label is generally reserved for shows that are only envisioned to run for a single season, although it isn’t unheard of for a limited series to become an ongoing one, if audience demand is there (Squid Game and Big Little Lies being notable examples).

Even the most successful K-dramas tend to have shorter runs than their American equivalents, with The Wonderfools star Park Eun-bin’s previous show, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, not returning despite strong viewership globally.

All things considered, it seems unlikely that The Wonderfools will continue for a second season at the time of writing.

The Wonderfools consists of eight episodes in total, each clocking in at about an hour long.

Who stars in The Wonderfools cast?

The Wonderfools cast is led by the aforementioned Extraordinary Attorney Woo star Park Eun-bin, playing a “trainwreck” who unexpectedly gains superpowers at the turn of the millennium.

In South Korea, the cast member currently getting the most attention is Cha Eun-woo – although not for positive reasons.

The mega-star, who boasts an Instagram following of almost 50 million people, has faced backlash after the Korean tax service revealed he owed around ₩13 billion (approx £6.5 million). The bill was reportedly settled in April (via The Straits Times).

Some had speculated that Cha’s role in The Wonderfools could be edited down, or cut entirely, in the midst of this negativity, but series director Yoo In-sik decided that the actor’s work deserved to be seen.

“We learnt about the news the same way everyone else did, through the headlines, after editing was already largely wrapped,” he explained. “This project was a long-held dream for me and a hard-fought labour for everyone involved.

“We prioritised the work as a whole… His performance was a real challenge – physically and emotionally – and like the rest of the cast, he gave it everything. I’m pleased with how it turned out.”
