The actress shared how she had a complex relationship with Driver, both on and off the screen. She wrote about several complicated instances she shared with the actor during the filming of the series in her memoir.

In her new memoir, Lena Dunham opened up about the time she starred in Girls. Adam Driver played her toxic on-again, off-again boyfriend on the show. Their relationship in real life wasn’t much different, according to the actress.
She recalled that friction began in the first season itself when they filmed their first sex scene. During the time, Dunham’s “careful blocking went out the window and he hurled me this way and that.” She recalled in the memoir (via Variety), “Stunned, I couldn’t speak for a moment, unsure of what had happened — had I lost directorial authority, allowed the scene to go off the rails, not given proper instructions? Would I be removed from my command post immediately?”
Dunham continued about the instance, “It wasn’t that I felt violated — and I also wouldn’t know if I had, as there was little in my sexual life that I hadn’t allowed to happen, and for no pay. But I felt that something intimate, confusing, and primal had played out in a scenario I was meant to control.”
She recalled how Driver walked out when she showed him the pilot, only to call three weeks later to say that he did not like watching himself. When the show was picked up, other instances between Driver and Dunham took place, including one where Driver threw a chair at a wall next to her when she forgot her lines during a rehearsal. She recounted many other such incidents in her memoir involving the actor.
