More than a decade after Agent Vinod hit theatres, actor Lalit Parimoo has shared his thoughts on why the ambitious spy thriller failed to connect with audiences despite generating considerable buzz before its release. During a conversation on Siddharth Kannan’s podcast, Parimoo spoke about the challenges faced by the film and suggested that excessive interference from the lead stars, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, may have impacted director Sriram Raghavan’s creative vision.

Speaking of the film‘s underwhelming performance, Lalit Parimoo said, “I think the main reason was that there was too much interference from the stars, Saif and Kareena. The way Sriram wanted to make that film, he couldn’t make it that way.”

The actor further claimed that the filmmaker was frequently being advised on creative decisions during production. “He was constantly being told what he should do, so it became a mess. The writing and the direction team… they didn’t get to present what they wanted. That was the flaw of the film,” Parimoo said.

Parimoo, who shared a long-standing professional relationship with Sriram Raghavan dating back to his television days, also stressed the importance of preserving a director’s vision. “Film is a director’s medium, so if the director has a vision, people should just follow that. And if the director has cast any actor, they should only take the actor’s suggestions if they are valid,” he stated.

The actor further argued that decisions driven by stardom rather than storytelling can often hurt a project. “If the actor is suggesting something because they are a star, then it means nothing. These kinds of adjustments ruin the film,” he added.

When asked whether Raghavan had personally discussed these issues with him, Parimoo clarified that the filmmaker never went into extensive detail about the situation. “He was talking about the interference; he did mention it,” Parimoo said.

Produced under Saif Ali Khan’s banner Illuminati Films, Agent Vinod featured Saif as a RAW agent and Kareena Kapoor as a Pakistani spy. The cast also included Gulshan Grover, Prem Chopra, Ram Kapoor and Ravi Kishan in important roles.
