For over two decades, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has remained one of the most anticipated Indian celebrities on the Cannes red carpet, consistently delivering fashion moments that spark global conversation. At the 79th Cannes Film Festival, the actor once again pushed the boundaries of red-carpet style, this time in a custom couture creation by designer Amit Aggarwal.

Titled Luminara, the couture ensemble was conceptualised as an exploration of light in motion. Moving beyond the traditional idea of illumination, the design interpreted light as energy, transformation, and movement through sculptural craftsmanship and engineered detailing. The look marked yet another dramatic fashion statement in Aishwarya’s evolving Cannes legacy, one that has long been associated with reinvention, individuality, and theatrical elegance.
At the heart of the creation lies Amit Aggarwal’s signature Crystal Vein embroidery technique, developed through more than 1500 hours of intricate handwork. Thousands of crystalline linear embellishments were individually placed across the garment and connected through a complex lattice-like structure. The detailing created the illusion of illuminated pathways flowing seamlessly across the body, giving the ensemble a constantly shifting visual identity as it interacted with movement and light.
The couture piece was rendered in a deep abyss blue shade inspired by cosmic vastness and the infinite nature of light travelling through space. Adding to the dramatic silhouette were structured wing-like extensions emerging from the shoulders, a design element rooted in biomimicry — a recurring inspiration in Amit Aggarwal’s work. The sharply contoured structure brought together futuristic architecture and fluid motion, allowing the garment to evolve visually under different lighting conditions.
The collaboration between Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, stylist Mohit Rai, and Amit Aggarwal aimed to merge cinematic grandeur with couture innovation. Reflecting on the vision behind the look, Amit said, “Aishwarya has always approached Cannes with a strong sense of individuality and evolution. With Luminara, Mohit and I wanted to create something that felt less like a garment and more like an energy field around her. The piece explores the idea of light as strength, movement, and transformation; while honouring the extraordinary radiance she has carried through decades on the global stage”.
For the unversed, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan attended the Cannes Film Festival as the brand ambassador of L’Oreal after other ambassadors like Alia Bhatt and Aditi Rao Hydari already made an appearance.
