While the young Avatar finally finds his earthbending teacher, the heroes soon discover that defeating the Fire Nation will require far more than mastering the elements.

Along the way, political conspiracies, betrayals and personal conflicts threaten to tear Team Avatar apart, while Princess Azula launches a plan that ultimately leads to the fall of Ba Sing Se itself.
So, what exactly happened in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 finale? Here’s everything you need to know.
*Spoilers ahead for Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2.*
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 ending explained: Why did Aang need to learn earthbending?
Following the events at the Northern Water Tribe, Aang needed to learn earthbending because mastering all four elements was the only way he could fulfill his role as the Avatar and eventually defeat the Fire Nation. With waterbending already under his belt, earth became the next step in his training.
After attempting to free King Bumi from imprisonment, Aang learns an important lesson instead. Bumi refuses to leave, explaining that he surrendered to protect his people. He also tells Aang about neutral jing — the ability to wait and listen rather than act immediately.

Eventually, Aang discovers that the perfect teacher is Toph Beifong, the mysterious Blind Bandit. Unlike Aang’s evasive airbending style, Toph forces him to stand his ground and face problems head-on.
Their difficult relationship ultimately helps Aang unlock earthbending for himself.
What is Sozin’s Comet?
One of the biggest revelations of the season comes from Sai, who discovers that Sozin’s Comet is approaching once again.
The comet previously allowed Fire Lord Sozin to wipe out the Air Nomads a century earlier. Once it returns, every firebender’s power will increase dramatically.

Realising the danger, Aang abandons his search for an earthbending teacher and heads toward Ba Sing Se, hoping to convince the Earth King to unite the world against the Fire Nation.
However, reaching the king proves much harder than expected.
Who really controlled Ba Sing Se?
Although Ba Sing Se appears peaceful, Aang eventually learns that the city is built on lies.
Long Feng, the seemingly friendly Minister of Culture, secretly controls the Dai Li and effectively rules the city while keeping Earth King Kuei isolated from reality.
The population is forbidden from discussing the war, and anyone who threatens the system simply disappears.
At first, Aang trusts Feng completely. But after Sai vanishes and General Sung reveals the truth, the Avatar realises that Long Feng himself commands the Dai Li.
Meanwhile, Azula infiltrates Ba Sing Se disguised as a Kyoshi Warrior and quickly figures out who truly holds power.
What did Team Avatar discover inside the Spirit Library?
Searching for answers about the comet, Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Jet and Professor Zei enter Wan Shi Tong’s Spirit Library.
There, Aang learns perhaps the most terrifying truth of all: if he dies while in the Avatar State, the reincarnation cycle will end permanently and the world will lose the Avatar forever.
Meanwhile, Avatar Kyoshi helps Toph uncover another crucial piece of information. During a solar eclipse — the Day of Black Sun — firebenders temporarily lose their bending.

Using Kyoshi’s records, Sokka calculates the eclipse’s date, giving humanity its first real opportunity to strike the Fire Nation.
However, their victory comes at a terrible cost.
Professor Zei betrays the group after revealing their intentions to Wan Shi Tong. The spirit attacks them, devours Zei, and destroys the library. As it begins collapsing, Toph escapes and desperately tries to hold the structure together from the outside, unable to stop Appa’s kidnappers.
Meanwhile, Jet sacrifices himself to hold off Wan Shi Tong long enough for Aang, Katara and Sokka to escape. By the time they return to the physical world, Jet is gone, having given his life to save his friends.
Why did Team Avatar fall apart?
After failing to convince Earth King Kuei about the comet, Long Feng turns the heroes against each other by exposing their secrets.
Katara’s nightly efforts to help the poor are used against her. Toph learns that her family unknowingly supplied military equipment to the Fire Nation.

Sokka becomes linked to Professor Zei’s disappearance. Aang, consumed by frustration over losing Appa, lashes out at everyone.
Eventually, the group separates completely, allowing the Dai Li to arrest Katara and Sokka while Toph returns home with her mother.
Ironically, the person who helps Aang during this crisis is Iroh. While searching for Appa, Aang encounters the former Fire Nation general, who reminds him that his friends must be allowed to be themselves rather than forced into his expectations.
Did Zuko finally change?
For much of the season, Zuko slowly becomes more compassionate.
Living among ordinary people in the Earth Kingdom changes his perspective. He protects innocent civilians, helps Fire Nation deserters and repeatedly risks his life to save strangers.
After rescuing Katara from the Dai Li, both are imprisoned together. Inside their cell, Zuko opens up about his mother and reveals that Fire Lord Ozai was the one who burned his face.

Katara, whose mother was killed by the Fire Nation, begins to see him differently. She even offers to use the Spirit Oasis water to heal his scar.
For a moment, it appears that Zuko is finally abandoning his obsession. But everything changes when Azula reaches him.
Using memories of their mother and appealing to their shared loneliness, Azula convinces Zuko to stand beside her once again.
When the final battle begins, Zuko chooses his sister over Team Avatar, devastating Katara.
On the way home, Toph discovers that her mother has secretly drugged her and locked her inside a metal box.
However, while trapped, Toph senses traces of earth within the metal itself. By manipulating those impurities, she creates an entirely new bending style.

As she proudly declares: “I’m Toph Beifong and I invented metalbending.”
Using her newfound ability, she escapes and reunites with her friends just in time.
How does season 2 end?
The season’s climax unfolds inside Lake Laogai.
Aang rescues Appa, while Azula seizes control of Ba Sing Se after betraying Long Feng and eliminating members of the Earth Kingdom military. As Fire Nation troops enter the city, Team Avatar attempts to escape. But Azula intercepts them.
During the battle, Zuko sides with Azula and fights Katara, despite everything they shared. Outnumbered and unwilling to lose anyone else, Aang enters the Avatar State.
Fully empowered, he easily overwhelms Azula and the Dai Li. However, before he can strike, his compassion causes him to hesitate.
Azula takes advantage of that moment and hits Aang with lightning. Since Aang is in the Avatar State, his death would permanently end the Avatar cycle.
Fortunately, Katara reaches him in time. Later using the sacred water from the Spirit Oasis, she manages to apparently save his life.
Aang briefly regains consciousness before falling unconscious once more as Team Avatar escapes aboard Appa.
Meanwhile, Iroh stays behind to protect Katara and is captured.
As Fire Nation soldiers march through Ba Sing Se, Earth King Kuei watches Appa flying overhead, finally realizing that his kingdom has fallen.
