Netflix-backed horror project Backrooms has not even reached theaters yet, but director Kane Parsons is already hinting that the strange universe could continue beyond one movie. The young filmmaker recently shared that he is finding it difficult to walk away from the franchise, teasing that audiences may see a little bit more from the series sooner rather than later.

Kane Parsons on Backrooms 2’s future potential
Speaking to ScreenRant on the premiere carpet, Parsons explained that although he has several projects on his radar, Backrooms still feels unfinished to him. He admitted he would have a “very hard time” saying the story is over and added that fans should expect more from the franchise “in the not-so-distant future.” While he stopped short of officially confirming a sequel, the comments strongly suggest ideas for a follow-up are already being discussed.
The upcoming film adapts Parsons’ viral YouTube horror series, which first exploded online in 2022. The eerie found-footage style videos, centered around endless yellow hallways and unsettling empty rooms, pulled in tens of millions of views. Parsons handled nearly everything himself on the web series, including directing, writing, animation, and music composition. The latest episode dropped in February 2025.
A24 later picked up the property for a feature adaptation, with Homeland and Westworld writer Will Soodik joining the project to handle the screenplay. Parsons stayed on as director, marking his first feature-length movie. The production also attracted major Hollywood names behind the scenes, including James Wan and Shawn Levy as producers.
The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Clark, a furniture store owner who discovers a terrifying alternate dimension hidden behind ordinary reality. According to Parsons, the production built nearly 30,000 square feet of physical backroom sets, making the maze-like environment difficult even for cast and crew to navigate. Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Lukita Maxwell, Finn Bennett, and Avan Jogia also star.
Backrooms releases in theaters May 29, 2026.
