While not official reviews, a majority of the early buzz from the review suggests it’s a good one. Nearly every reaction touches on the tension and great atmosphere Kane Parsons has delivered. Check out some reactions to Backrooms below:
#Backrooms is an unnerving, atmospheric nightmare with outstanding yellow-tinged 90s-coreimagery, creepy creature design, and deeply unsettling vibes. Chiwetel Ejiofor & Renate Reinsve are excellent, as always. pic.twitter.com/bkIUA39WO5

While #Backrooms ultimately works better as a series, Kane Parsons delivers a promising debut feature, firmly establishing himself as one to watch. I’m a sucker for liminal horror, and when BACKROOMS works, it’s a waking nightmare. Easily the best creepypasta adaptation yet. pic.twitter.com/hn8RcVjcYt

Kane Parsons’ #Backrooms is a TRIP. A brilliant, frightening vision. Beautifully claustrophobic, pulse-pounding & freaky AF. Superb world building, edge-of-your-seat suspense & earned scares. The Backrooms originated as a 4chan creepypasta thread. The concept is that there are “wrong areas” of reality, also known as the Backrooms, that people can suddenly find themselves trapped in. These areas are typically portrayed as endless carpeted and monotoned rooms lit with fluorescent lights that emit a buzzing white noise effect. People can get lost in the Backrooms for long periods of time; however, there are also monsters that inhabit the liminal space.
The concept of the Backrooms quickly took off on Reddit following the initial thread. In 2022, Parsons started a series of Backrooms short films on YouTube, which then went viral and largely brought the concept into the mainstream. Severance creator Dan Erickson said that The Backrooms were one of his many inspirations when working on the Apple TV+ show.
In addition to Ejiofor, the cast of Backrooms includesRenate Reinsve,Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lucite Maxwell, and Avan Jogia. The script comes from Will SoodikandRoberto Patino, while James Wan and Michael Clear are producing for Wan’s Atomic Monster.
