Netflix’s Beef has garnered mostly positive reviews for Season 2, earning a high score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it’s still a drop-off from the first installment. The second season’s reception is ultimately not as good as that of the comedy-drama anthology show’s debut chapter. Created by Lee Sung Jin, Beef Season 1 premiered on April 6, 2023. Its cast included Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan replaced them as leads in the sophomore season.
What critics are saying about Beef Season 2 in reviews
The critics have mostly good things to say about Beef Season 2. Aisha Harris of NPR wrote, “Season 2 is compelling enough largely because its stars gamely tap into the spirit of the show’s M.O.; at any given moment, each character may reveal the worst of themselves, which looks different for everyone.”
Meanwhile, CBR’s Katie Doll called Season 2 “a cleverly written story that takes the course of revenge as two relationships spin out of control.”
Lacy Baugher of Den of Geek praised the actors, writing, “While this season has plenty of buzzy moments and more than a few surprises, the real reason to indulge in this second helping of Beef is its cast, which is absolutely stacked from top to bottom with outstanding performers.”
Elsewhere, Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter observed that Beef Season 2 is a “bold” and “well-acted,” before calling it “slightly over-extended.”
Meanwhile, Judy Berman of Time Magazine noted that Season 2 is “more novel, and more entertaining, is the way Lee sets up this season’s ensemble as a nesting doll of No Exits, with each toxic couple trying to extort their way out from under a richer, more powerful pair.”
Beef Season 2 gets worse Rotten Tomatoes score than Season 1
At the time of this article’s composition, Beef Season 2 has garnered an 87% approval rating on the review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes based on 47 reviews. While this is an impressive rating, the show’s inaugural chapter currently has an astounding 98% score on the site after 125 reviews.
