Actress and environmental activist Dia Mirza has responded to the debate surrounding her recent comments on climate change, after a statement she made during a podcast discussion triggered widespread conversation across social media.

Dia Mirza clarifies viral climate change remark; says she stands by her ‘Patriarchy caused the climate crisis’ statement
The controversy began after Dia appeared on the podcast All About Her, hosted by Soha Ali Khan and featuring environmentalist Arati Kumar Rao. During a discussion about environmental degradation and climate change, the actress remarked, “It is the men in this world. It is the men who have driven the climate change, and they are totally responsible for the chaos.” The comment quickly gained traction online, with users expressing differing opinions. While some agreed with her argument and interpreted it as a critique of long-standing power structures, others felt that the statement oversimplified the complex factors behind the global climate crisis.
Addressing the reactions, Dia took to social media to share a video and a detailed note elaborating on the context behind her remarks. Reaffirming her position, she wrote, “Since so many of you are debating this, it is timely to explain as simply as one can. I stand by my statement ‘Patriarchy caused the climate crises.’” In her clarification, Dia argued that climate change should not be viewed solely as an environmental issue but also as a crisis rooted in inequality and systems of power. She stated that for centuries, patriarchal structures have prioritized extraction, exploitation, and control over care, sustainability, and protection. “Climate change is often spoken about as an environmental crisis. But it is also a crisis of inequality,” she said.
The actress further explained that the discussion on the podcast explored how systems driven by what she described as extractive and dominating practices have contributed to economic models that fuel climate change. According to Dia, these same systems often marginalize voices advocating for environmental protection and women’s rights. Highlighting the disproportionate impact of climate change on women and girls, particularly those in vulnerable communities, she pointed to challenges such as water scarcity, food insecurity, displacement, and loss of livelihoods. She also noted that women remain underrepresented in many decision-making spaces related to environmental policy and action.
Dia emphasized that conversations around climate action must also include discussions about justice, equity, and social responsibility. She urged people to question systems that reward excessive consumption and resource extraction while overlooking values such as care, cooperation, and stewardship. Concluding her statement, the actress wrote, “The climate crisis is not only about carbon. It is about how we choose to relate to each other and to the natural world. Building a sustainable future requires us to move away from systems of domination and towards systems rooted in equity, compassion, and respect for all life.”
Known for her long-standing commitment to environmental causes, Dia Mirza’s comments have reignited conversations around the intersection of climate change, gender, and social structures, with the debate continuing to draw attention across digital platforms.
