Veteran filmmaker David Dhawan has weighed in on the growing culture of online trolling and the comparisons often drawn between actors in the industry. He shared his candid perspective on both the issues in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama.

Addressing the rise of social media criticism, Dhawan said, “Whoever has a phone is able to troll these days. There are people who might not even have watched the film and still they are talking (about it). But I believe in the audience that goes into the theatres and sees the film. If the film is good, you can’t pull it down. Ultimately the film will speak.” His remarks reflect a strong faith in theatrical audiences over online commentary, emphasizing that a film’s quality ultimately determines its success.

Speaking about his son, actor Varun Dhawan, and the frequent comparisons with stars like Govinda and Salman Khan, Dhawan added, “That’s his job on how he looks at being compared. He can overcome that. He is a disciplined actor. Being disciplined is very important today. And he has become choosy also to pick up films. Earlier he used to do (a lot of films). But now he says that he will do only if there is something new.”

He also pointed out that dealing with criticism is not new for actors. “All actors go through it (trolling). Earlier, so much used to be said about Salman also. But he is an excellent guy. I have worked with him, so I know,” Dhawan said, highlighting his long association with the superstar.

Dhawan’s comments underline the evolving nature of audience engagement in the digital era, while reinforcing the importance of resilience and discipline in an actor’s journey.

Dhawan’s next Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is all set to release in cinemas on June 5. The film stars Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde in lead roles.
