Mark Critch has revealed that upcoming fifth season of Son of a Critch will be its last
Mark Critch announced on Instagram that the fifth season of Son of a Critch will be the CBC comedy’s last. The This Hour Has 22 Minutes star confirmed that cameras have started rolling on the final season in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Production on the 12-episode season will continue until June 18.
“We’re heading back to 1992, the year I graduated high school, so you can expect all the awkwardness and growing pains that come with it,” Critch wrote. “And since it’s the last year of high school, it will also be our final chapter. Growing up is hard to do, but it sure is fun to watch.”
The final season follows young Mark navigating his last year of high school. Newfoundland’s cod moratorium crisis turns his world upside down during this pivotal time. Mark remains determined to chase his dream of becoming an actor despite the uncertainty around him.
Critch portrays his own father, Mike Sr., in the series. Meanwhile, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth plays young Mark, while Malcolm McDowell stars as grandfather Pop. Claire Rankin, Colton Gobbo, Mark Ezekiel Rivera and Sophia Powers also return. Additionally, guest stars this season include Shawn Doyle, Susan Kent and Rick Mercer.
Behind the scenes, Critch created the show alongside co-showrunner Tim McAuliffe. Project 10 Productions and Hawco Productions produce it in association with CBC and Lionsgate Television. Andrew Barnsley and Allan Hawco serve as executive producers alongside Critch and McAuliffe.
Beyond its loyal fanbase, the series has earned recognition including a 2026 Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Comedy Series. It also won the Cogeco Fund Audience Choice Award at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards. In the U.S., the show has aired on The CW since 2023.
Season 5 will premiere in fall 2026 on CBC and the free CBC Gem streaming service.
