Prime Video’s The Boys has built a massive global fan base over the years, but actor Karl Urban says even he did not expect the series to grow into such a cultural phenomenon. The actor, who plays fan-favourite Billy Butcher, recently reflected on the journey of the show and revealed an unexpected behind-the-scenes moment from Season 3 involving leaked scripts.

Karl Urban reveals, “There was a mole on set feeding scripts” during The Boys Season 3 shoot
Speaking about the growing success of the series, Karl Urban said, “I learned a long time ago it’s dangerous to have expectations. I wouldn’t say I had any expectations of the show, but I certainly had hopes. We were greenlit for a second season, and it slowly dawned on me that this show is a hit, and not just by the ratings numbers, but in day-to-day life. The interactions with people who are coming up and saying hey, I love your show, can I have my picture with you. It was this slow process as the show became more popular, directly proportional to the loss of anonymity then I knew we had reached a totally new threshold, which I had never experienced before, at the beginning of season three when there was a mole on set feeding scripts and information to the internet. It was wild.”
His comments offer a glimpse into how The Boys evolved from a streaming series with a loyal niche audience into one of Prime Video’s most talked-about original shows. Known for its satirical take on superheroes, political commentary and graphic storytelling, the show has consistently remained in the spotlight since its debut.
Based on the bestselling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys was developed by showrunner Eric Kripke. The series also features an ensemble cast including Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell and Colby Minifie, among others.
Produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, the show is now heading toward its concluding chapter. The first four episodes of The Boys Season 5 are currently streaming exclusively on Prime Video, with new episodes releasing every Wednesday until the finale on May 13. The final season is available in multiple languages including English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
As anticipation builds around how the story of Billy Butcher and the Supes will end, Karl Urban’s latest remarks have once again reminded fans just how unexpectedly huge The Boys became over the years.
