The Legally Blonde prequel has received a poor critical reception on Rotten Tomatoes. The latest Prime Video series is based on the popular 2001 romantic comedy featuring Reese Witherspoon.
What is the Legally Blonde prequel show’s Rotten Tomatoes score?
At the time of writing, Legally Blonde prequel Elle holds a Tomatometer score of just 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 13 critic reviews. It’s really abysmal, especially when compared to the original movie it’s connected to. Obviously, it’s not good news for fans of Legally Blonde who were hoping to get a great experience with the Prime Video TV series.
Upon its release in 2001, Reese Witherspoon’s film received generally positive reviews from critics. Currently, it holds a solid Tomatometer score of 75% and a good Popcornmeter score of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes. Plus, it was a box office hit as well, making over $140 million worldwide against a budget of just $18 million.
Earlier this month, Prime Video released the official trailer for Elle, teasing the story of the prequel TV show. It features Lexi Minetree(Law & Order: SVU) in the lead role of Elle Woods. In 1995, Elle’s parents decide to move to Seattle, where their daughter struggles to make new friends despite her best efforts. But then, a strange turn of events leads to unexpected results for her character.
The show also includes June Diane Raphael as Elle’s mother, Eva, and Tom Everett Scott as her father, Wyatt. Other key cast members on the series include Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano, Chandler Kinney, Zac Looker, Amy Pietz, Brad Harder, Chloe Wepper, Danielle Chand, and more.
While the Legally Blonde prequel is struggling to gain early positive word-of-mouth from critics, it has already been renewed for Season 2. Elle has Laura Kittrell (High School, Insecure) as its showrunner, creator, and executive producer. Caroline Dries, Lauren Neustadter, Amanda Brown, Marc Platt, and Brad Van Arragon are also executive producing.
Elle premieres with all eight episodes on Prime Video on July 1, 2026.
