It’s been a long time since David Mitchell‘s murder mystery series Ludwig took viewers by storm on BBC One, but finally we are starting to get some frequent updates on the development of season 2.

The show’s second season, which will reunite viewers with Mitchell‘s John, Anna Maxwell Martin‘s Lucy, Dipo Ola’s Russell and the rest of the characters, is on the way soon, with a first-look teaser and initial images having now been unveiled.
But what else do we know about the new season, who from the cast is returning and who is joining new, and when can we expect the episodes to be released?
Read on for everything you need to know about Ludwig season 2.
Will there be a Ludwig season 2?
Yes, Ludwig was renewed for season 2 on 31st October 2024, after the show had been hailed as the BBC’s biggest scripted launch for two years.
David Mitchell commented: “I’m delighted that John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor has failed to escape the clutches of the Cambridge police and will have to continue to face up to the city’s alarming conundrum-based crime wave.”
Meanwhile, Kenton Allen, Executive Producer and CEO Big Talk Studios, said: “The success of Ludwig is a testament to the power of Mark Brotherhood’s sharp and intelligent storytelling combined with the phenomenal talents of David, Anna and the brilliant supporting cast.
“It’s no surprise to me that the show has been such a resounding hit in these uncertain times. I think audiences crave solutions to life’s problems and Ludwig’s detective skills give us all comfort in this often puzzling world.”

Additionally, Jon Petrie, BBC Director of Comedy Commissioning, stated: “The blend of top-tier British comic talent, a gripping mystery, and brilliantly crafted crime storylines had viewers hooked from day one. We had high hopes for Ludwig, and it’s safe to say this comedy-detective series with a twist has become a true standout.
“We can’t thank Mark Brotherhood, David Mitchell, Anna Maxwell Martin, and the entire cast and crew enough for creating something so special. We’re eagerly awaiting series two, though it’s a bit of a shame we’ll have to spoil the surprises for ourselves by actually reading the scripts first!”
Mark Brotherhood, Creator and Writer, says: “We’ve all been blown away by the reaction to Ludwig and I’m thrilled we get to come back with a whole new set of puzzles for him to solve in his unique way”.

Not only has John now joined the force as an official consultant, meaning he no longer has to hide his identity, but James is still missing, and there are still fundamental questions surrounding why he made the decisions he did.
Following a screening of the first episode, when asked whether he himself knew the answer to the cipher left by James which John has up on his wall, Mitchell revealed that he didn’t, and said: “Even over the whole first series, that’s not all solved, which is why we hope for more.”
When will Ludwig season 2 be released?

Now that Ludwig season 2 has been confirmed, thought turns to when exactly we can expect it back.
It’s been a long time since Ludwig season 1 debuted, back in September 2024. We don’t yet know exactly when season 2 will arrive, but we do know it will be in summer 2026. This means there will have been around a two-year wait.
We will keep this page updated with any more concrete information regarding the release date of a Ludwig season 2 as we get it.
What will Ludwig season 2 be about?

The official synopsis for Ludwig season 2 says: “Picking up from the end of series one, master puzzle-setter John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor (David Mitchell) is now a Crime Scene Consultant, working alongside DCI Russell Carter (Dipo Ola), on ‘impossible’ crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority.
“No longer having to masquerade as his brother, he’s openly more ‘Ludwig’ than ever – brilliant at solving puzzles but hopeless at everything else. But John’s identical twin brother, James, is still missing, and now that he’s an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.
“Of course, John won’t stop and neither will Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin), John’s sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James – a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun.”
Who will return to star in a Ludwig season 2?

The cast of Ludwig will of course continue to be led by David Mitchell as the titular puzzle solver, while other central figures who will be back include Anna Maxwell Martin and Dipo Ola.
Three major cast members from season 1 won’t be returning. Sophie Willan won’t be back as Holly Pinder, after her character was found dead in the season 1 finale, while Gerran Howell and Izuka Hoyle have also left the series, with their characters DC Simon Evans and DS Alice Finch not returning.
Instead, two new police officers will be seen on Russell and John’s team, in the form of DC Ethan Cole and DC Caitlin Sullivan, played by Ben Ashenden and Rumi Sutton.
Meanwhile, Mark Bonnar is joining the series as newspaper editor Gareth Fisher, while Sian Clifford will playing local MP Joanne Kemper.
