“You can’t make a band with loonies!” “It’s a valid psychiatric experiment.” 🎸 Samuel Goldwyn Films has revealed an official US trailer for the extra kooky dark comedy titled The Last Viking from Denmark, the latest by filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen (also of Adam’s Apples, Men & Chicken, Riders of Justice). Finally opening in the US this May in theates and on VOD – this one is worth a watch. It first premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival last year to plenty of positive reviews from critics – it’s an original, very dark and strange comedy unlike anything else out there. Starring Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas as brothers, but Mikkelsen is traumatized and has strange psychological quirks – he thinks he’s John Lennon as part of his psychological disorder due to trauma. After his brother, a bank robber, is released from jail he tries to unlock his other brother’s memory to recover stolen loot – since he’s the only one who knows where it’s buried near their parent’s old house in the woods. Comedy ensues when a psychiatrist puts together a band to help jog Mads’ memory. The cast includes Sofie Gråbøl, Lars Ranthe, Kardo Razzazi, Lars Brygmann, Nicolas Bro, & Søren Malling. This is a good one! Anything with Mikkelsen is a good time.

Anker and Manfred are two brothers who are reunited following Anker’s years-long jail stint for a bank robbery. Since Manfred is the only one who knows where the loot is buried next to their hold home, Anker has no choice but to contend not only with his brother’s many psychological issues but the legacy of the traumas they suffered in their childhood. Of course, being an Anders Thomas Jensen movie, the brothers are two members of a highly memorable gallery of misfits, miscreants, and many other unique individuals with their own foibles and fixations, one of which may involve re-forming the most famous pop band ever. The Last Viking, originally known as Den sidste viking in Danish, is directed by acclaimed Danish writer / filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen, director of the films Flickering Lights, The Green Butchers, Adam’s Apples, Men & Chicken, and Riders of Justice previously, and many short films. He has also written tons of screenplays for various Danish films. The screenplay is also written by Anders Thomas Jensen. Produced by Sisse Graum Jørgensen and Sidsel Hybschmann. This first premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival last year in Out of Competition and it also played at TIFF and Zurich as well. This already opened in Denmark in October last fall. Jensen’s The Last Viking hits US theaters + VOD starting May 29th, 2026 this summer.
