Main Vaapas Aaunga leaves partition veterans emotional at special Delhi screening ahead of release
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Main Vaapas Aaunga has been generating interest for its storytelling and music. The film explores themes of love, identity, longing, and belonging against one of the most significant periods in the subcontinent’s history.
The screening was conceived as a tribute to those who witnessed the events of Partition firsthand and to the generations whose lives were shaped by its aftermath. Following the screening, several veterans and family members opened up about their experiences and the stories they had inherited from their parents and grandparents.
One attendee recalled family accounts of migration and survival, saying, “My grandfather, my grandmother, they used to tell us that this is how it happened, how they first went from Pakistan to Amritsar, then from Amritsar they came to Delhi.”
Another guest reflected on the painful memories of leaving behind their home and possessions during the migration. Sharing a personal story, the attendee said, “A lot of things were left behind. We left everything there. My father had a motorcycle then, a brand new one; we hadn’t even put a nameplate on it yet. We had to leave it behind. We thought we’ll come back.”
For many viewers, the film brought back memories connected to stories passed down through generations. One attendee remarked, “I was born in ‘47 and that was when we were moving back. So it’s more the stories from parents and siblings.” Another audience member praised the emotional impact of the film, describing it as “really, really very impactful. Each minute, so emotional.”
Several guests appreciated the film’s portrayal of loss, displacement, and human resilience, while others highlighted how its themes of hope and belonging felt relevant even today. The post-screening discussions were filled with recollections, emotions, and reflections, turning the event into much more than a conventional film screening.
Set in Imtiaz Ali’s world of love and longing, Main Vaapas Aaunga stars Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari, and Vedang Raina in pivotal roles. Produced by Birla Studios & Applause Entertainment along with Mohit Choudhary and Shibasish Sarkar of Window Seat Films, the film is set to arrive in cinemas on June 12, 2026. The music of the film has been released under the Tips Music label.
