Marvel Television’s animated series X-Men ’97 is returning to Disney+ next month – and the new season has already gone down a storm with critics.

The acclaimed revival, which continues the story of the beloved ’90s X-Men animated series, is set to debut its second season on Disney+ on Wednesday 1 July, more than two years after season 1 first arrived.
Ahead of its return, X-Men ’97 season 2 is currently sitting on a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, although that number could change as more reviews are published and the full season is made available.
Only the first four episodes of the new run have been screened for critics so far, but the early reaction suggests Marvel Animation has maintained the high standard set by season 1, which itself earned widespread acclaim from fans and reviewers.
The new season will pick up after the dramatic events of the season 1 finale, which saw the X-Men defeat Bastion and stop Asteroid M from destroying the planet – only for the team to be scattered through time.

Season 2 finds the mutant heroes divided across different eras as they attempt to find their way home, while new dangers emerge in the 1990s during their absence.
The latest trailer, titled Roll Call, leans heavily into the expanded scope of the new episodes, spotlighting an enormous roster of mutants from across the X-Men universe.
Alongside familiar faces including Professor X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Wolverine, Beast, Morph, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Jubilee and Sunspot, the teaser also features Cable, Forge, Bishop, Archangel, Psylocke, Emma Frost, Siryn, Wolfsbane, Strong Guy, Multiple Man, Havok, Polaris, Magneto and Apocalypse.
The footage also teases some major comic book-inspired developments, with Apocalypse set to take centre stage following the end of season 1.
