Actress Mrunal Thakur is all set to explore a lighter and more comic space with Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, directed by veteran filmmaker David Dhawan. During the trailer launch event of the upcoming rom-com entertainer, the actress spoke about stepping into the world of commercial comedy and shared details about her first meeting with the filmmaker.

Known for her performances in intense dramas, emotional love stories, and thrillers, Mrunal admitted that comedy was a genre she always wanted to explore — but only with the right filmmaker. The actress described working with David Dhawan as a major milestone in her career and revealed that the project happened unexpectedly.

“When I first met David Dhawan ji over a cup of chai, I had no idea what the film was, who the hero was, or what the story was. I think during that 45-minute conversation, sir told me just one thing: ‘You’re a good actor, and I want to present you with a role that will bring out the funny side of you as well,’” said Mrunal during the event.

The actress further shared that while she has built a strong filmography in serious and dramatic roles over the years, she always wanted her entry into commercial comedy to happen through a David Dhawan film. “But as an actor, if I was entering the comedy genre, a commercial entertainer, it had to be a David Dhawan film,” she added. Speaking candidly about her admiration for the filmmaker, Mrunal continued, “And honestly, David sir, I wish I had met you many, many moons ago so that I would have had more opportunities to work with you. In my head, I was thinking, ‘Sir, please sign me for three films at least!’”

Mrunal also described the collaboration as an important learning experience and credited the film for helping her improve her comic timing. “I genuinely feel my comic timing has improved after this movie!” she said.

The film marks the first collaboration between Mrunal Thakur and David Dhawan and also brings together Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde, and Maniesh Paul on screen for the first time. The ensemble cast also includes Mouni Roy, Jimmy Shergill, and Chunky Panday in key roles.

Billed as a family comedy entertainer, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is slated to release in cinemas on June 5.
