Cameras are officially rolling on Netflix’s next big romantic blockbuster. Matthew McConaughey and Oscar-winner Zoe Saldaña have touched down in Italy to begin production on Positano, a high-stakes romantic caper from Working Title Films.
First reported as a “hot spec script” back in December 2025, Netflix fast-tracked the project after landing the package. As of May 11th, 2026, we can confirm that principal photography has commenced on location.
First Look: Filming Underway in Salerno
Locals and fans have already spotted the production in action. Early reports from the set in Salerno, Italy, indicate that filming began on the water. Lead actor Matthew McConaughey was seen alongside director Daniel Roher aboard a boat, likely capturing the first of many picturesque scenes the Amalfi Coast is known for. While Zoe Saldaña wasn’t snapped filming today, she is closeby with partner Marco Perego with scenes to be filmed soon.
While the film is titled Positano, production listings suggest the shoot will span multiple stunning Italian vistas, including Lake Iseo, throughout the summer.

What is Positano about?
Netflix is keeping the finer plot details under lock and key (as they often do with their major features), but the film is being described as a “romantic caper.”
Expect a blend of high-energy heist elements mixed with the classic charm of a Mediterranean romance. The project is currently filming under the working title “TONNO.”
Who is behind the film?
The project boasts some serious heavyweight talent both in front of and behind the camera:
- The Cast: Matthew McConaughey continues his impressive “second act” after the success of The Lost Bus. He stars alongside Zoe Saldaña, who is fresh off her Best Supporting Actress Oscar win for Netflix’s Emilia Pérez.
- The Director: Daniel Roher is making his move into big-budget narrative features here. He previously won an Academy Award for the documentary Navalny and received rave reviews for his narrative debut, Tuner.
- The Writers: The script comes from the duo Alessandro Tanaka and Brian Gatewood (Sharper).
- The Producers: Legendary powerhouse Working Title Films (Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner) is producing alongside Kylo Productions and Italy’s own Wildside.
When will Positano be on Netflix?
Production is scheduled to run from mid-May through mid-July 2026.
Given the typical post-production turnaround for a major Netflix feature, we don’t expect a release until mid-to-late 2027. However, with the star power of McConaughey and Saldaña attached, this is clearly being positioned as a tentpole release for the streamer.
Production Status: Filming (As of May 11, 2026)
Location: Italy (Salerno, Positano, Lake Iseo)
Working Title: TONNO
