BBC’s Hamburg Days announces cast
W&B Television, Turbine Studios and AGC Television have unveiled the cast for Hamburg Days, a six-part drama chronicling the Beatles’ formative years, as the BBC reports. Filming has begun across Hamburg, Munich and Liverpool on the series. ZDF co-finances the production, while the BBC has acquired it for BBC iPlayer and BBC One.

Rhys Mannion stars as John Lennon, with Liverpudlian singer-songwriter Ellis Murphy playing Paul McCartney. Newcomer Harvey Brett takes on the role of George Harrison, while Louis Landau portrays Stu Sutcliffe. Meanwhile, newcomer Patrick Gilmore plays Pete Best. Luna Jordan rounds out the principal cast as photographer Astrid Kirchherr, alongside Casper von Bülow as Klaus Voormann.
The series draws inspiration from Voormann’s autobiography of the same name. Voormann befriended the band during their early Hamburg residencies and later designed the iconic Revolver album cover. He now serves as an exclusive consultant on the production.
Behind the camera, Christian Schwochow, known for The Crown, created and showruns the series. Jamie Carragher, a writer on Succession, serves as head writer. Schwochow directs alongside Laura Lackmann, with Frank Lamm handling cinematography. Additionally, BAFTA-winning producer David Holmes curates the music.
The logline describes the story’s premise. “An inexperienced young rock ‘n’ roll band from Liverpool collide with two young artists, Klaus Voormann and Astrid Kirchherr,” it reads. “Together, they help spark a transformation that turns a scrappy group of teenagers into the greatest music phenomenon the world has ever known.”
Notably, the production arrives alongside Sony’s four-film Beatles series from director Sam Mendes. That project stars Harris Dickinson as Lennon, Paul Mescal as McCartney, Joseph Quinn as Harrison and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr. AGC International handles worldwide sales for Hamburg Days outside the UK and Germany.
