“I’m just trying to grow up and everything’s going wrong…” Madman Films has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film from the US titled Lowland Kids, which first premiered last year. Adapted from her own 2019 short film of the same name, this doc is the first feature film from director Sandra Winther. It played at CPH:DOX, DOC NYC, Sheffield DocFest, Zurich, and other film festivals last year with an eye for release this summer. With Hurricane Ida approaching, Howard and Juliette Brunet, the last teenagers left on the Isle de Jean Charles in Louisiana, reckon with looming displacement from their beloved family home. They’re described as “America’s First Climate Refugees” – one review from last year describes the film further: “Shot over six years, the debut feature from Danish director Sandra Winther is a lyrical, luminous portrait of lives on the periphery and a story that seems destined, unfortunately, to become increasingly common for future generations.” Indeed a tragic story and one of many more to come as this world changes.
Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Sandra Winther’s doc Lowland Kids, direct from YouTube:

Set on Louisiana’s rapidly vanishing Isle de Jean Charles, this quietly powerful documentary captures the lives of two teenagers and their uncle as they navigate the slow erosion of their home. Faced with forced resettlement by the US government, their story unfolds through intimate, observational filmmaking that renders their daily lives with empathy and unbridled honesty. As the land disappears beneath their feet, this documentary film offers a timely, human portrait of climate displacement. Lowland Kids is directed by newcomer indie filmmaker Sandra Winther, making her first feature film after many shorts previously; adapting her own 2019 short film. Produced by Darren Aronofsky, Lauren Avinoam, William Crouse, Sigrid Dyekjær, Lizzie Gillett, & Brendan Naylor. This initially premiered at the 2025 CPH:DOX Film Festival last year and it also played at DOC NYC. No release dates are set yet – stay tuned for updates. Who’s interested?
