The newly released trailer for Dutton Ranch offers a clear reference to Kevin Costner’s John Dutton. It highlights how the character continues to be acknowledged within the story, even after his death. The trailer has also drawn attention from viewers of the original series, with many looking ahead to how the story continues in the spinoff.

Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone character gets mention in new Dutton Ranch trailer
The newly released trailer for Dutton Ranch includes a direct reference to Kevin Costner’s character from Yellowstone, as Beth and Rip reflect on John Dutton’s absence.
In the trailer, Kelly Reilly’s Beth and Cole Hauser’s Rip are shown seated at a dining table. Looking at a tribute made up of John’s cowboy hat and photograph, Beth says, “I miss him.” Meanwhile, Rip responds, “We brought the best part of your father with us.” The exchange directly connects the spinoff to the events of the original series.
The series centers on Beth, Rip and their adopted son Carter, portrayed by Finn Little, following their relocation from Montana to Rio Paloma, Texas. This transition takes place after the events of Yellowstone Season 5, in which John Dutton was killed in a contracted attack connected to Sarah Atwood, an associate of Jamie Dutton.
Additional scenes in the trailer show multiple confrontations. These include physical altercations, an explosion, and the presence of dead bodies. In one scene, Beth instructs Carter, “I need you ready for the hard parts ’cause they’re coming.” To this, he responds, “Sounds like fun.”
The trailer also features additional moments with Ed Harris and Annette Bening. The latter’s character points out that Rio Paloma is “a bit more complicated.”
Dutton Ranch will debut its first two episodes on May 15 on Paramount+ and Paramount Network. It will be followed by weekly episodes for the rest of its nine-episode run.
