Meg Marinis explains why Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver left Grey’s Anatomy
Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that financial realities drove the decision to write off Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman. Marinis and Shonda Rhimes informed both actors shortly after the New Year while breaking the final four episodes. Marinis acknowledged the industry’s current challenges played a role, stating the exit was “initiated by story” while noting “it’s no secret what this industry is experiencing right now.”
The showrunner described the process as emotionally taxing for everyone involved in crafting the couple’s departure. She called the conversations “very difficult and very painful,” adding that writing and rewatching the episode proved equally hard. Marinis praised both actors for their professionalism, saying “they came in here with grace, and they exited beautifully.”
Meg Marinis says Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver can potentially return in future
Marinis deliberately kept Owen and Teddy alive to preserve the possibility of future appearances on the long-running ABC medical drama. The writers pitched an “iconic Grey’s Anatomy death” for Owen, but Marinis rejected it outright. She explained her reasoning clearly: “I cannot kill Owen Hunt. I love that character too much and I want to see him again.”
The showrunner confirmed she wants both actors back when circumstances allow and remains open to directing opportunities as well. She cautioned against rushing their return, noting that bringing them back “too immediately doesn’t make their beautiful exit as sweeping.” Marinis reassured fans by emphasizing the show’s tradition of revisiting departed characters, telling both actors directly that “we always bring our family back.”
Grey’s Anatomy has already secured renewal for season 23 on ABC, with all episodes currently streaming on Hulu.
