Before the yellow saree, before the rain, and before the song ‘Tip Tip Barsa Paani’ turned her into one of the defining images of 1990s Bollywood, Raveena Tandon was being called “Little Miss Jinx.”

Raveena Tandon reflects on 35 years in Bollywood: From “Little miss jinx” to National Award winner
As she marks 35 years in the film industry, Tandon has spoken about navigating the industry’s harsher early judgements with a matter-of-fact resilience that has defined her career.
From jinx to lucky mascot overnight
Tandon’s debut opposite Salman Khan in Patthar Ke Phool (1991) was followed by a string of films that did not perform well at the box office. The media, she told Variety India, was unsparing: “They called me ‘Little Miss Jinx Raveena’.”
What followed Mohra (1994) was an almost comical reversal. Producer Gulshan Rai publicly declared her a “lucky mascot” at a press conference, and request for even a single shot in a film began pouring in. “Suddenly I was lucky,” she recalled. “From jinx to lucky mascot. It changed overnight.”
The rules of playing a leading actress in the ’90s
Tandon was candid about the constraints that came with being a leading actress in that era. “You had to be glamorous,” she said. “Even when you cried, you had to look pretty.” She noted that actors like Aruna Irani, Kiran Kher, and Reema Lagoo had considerably more room to play morally complex characters. “They got to play grey,” she said.
Her own shift came with Shool (1999), which she identified as the film that altered industry perception of her range. “It changed the perception,” she said. Daman (2001) would go on to earn her a National Award, but it was Shool that she credits as the real turning point.
Thirty-five years on, Tandon remains active in the industry, and her account of that arc, told without grievance or sentimentality, reads as a fairly accurate description of how commercial Hindi cinema has always worked: unpredictably, and on its own terms.
