After a petition was launched to save the axed Stargate series, the superfans behind it have spoken out on their hopes for the show – including their wish for another streamer to pick it up if Amazon don’t want to take it forward.
Shane and Brian Montgomery, also known as the Popcast Brothers, have been campaigning for a new Stargate series since 2019 and, after news that Martin Gero’s revived series wouldn’t be moving forward at Amazon, created a petition which now has more than 60,000 signatures.
Speaking exclusively to Radio Times, Shane said: “For a long time, we were fighting for Stargate to be brought back under original TV co-creator Brad Wright as Brad had been fighting to do new Stargate for years and he was the best person to bring back the franchise as it would respect what had come before.
“When Amazon bought MGM, we continued championing for Brad, but when it was announced that Martin would showrun a new series, since Martin was also part of original Stargate, we got 100% behind him as well.
“The petition is one of the only ways to visibly show Amazon how many fans there are that want Martin to make new Stargate so we hope we got a lot of signatures! The series should be saved because Stargate is one of the most successful science-fiction franchises of all time and frankly we want to see that universe grow and thrive.”
He added: “We’d love to see more than a million signatures. There are way more fans around the world – millions upon millions – and in order to get Amazon’s attention, we need to show them there are a lot of people waiting to watch a new Stargate show that honors what came before, but tells new stories for today’s audiences.
“If Amazon didn’t want to move forward with Stargate, we’d love to see them lease the property to another streamer that is interested in having Martin, Brad Wright or Joe Mallozzi create new Stargate.”
In their reporting of the show’s cancellation, Variety cited a source as saying that Amazon executives “were concerned that Gero’s take on the series would not have broad appeal” beyond the existing Stargate fanbase.
Many fans, including Shane and Brian, have taken issue with that argument.
“If you already have millions upon millions of Stargate fans world wide who haven’t had a series in more than 15 years and who would drop everything to watch a new series, Amazon has an established foundation they can build upon,” Shane said,.
“It frankly doesn’t make any sense to us. A new show would work great for a broad and modern audience. Take a look at Project Hail Mary. It was a worldwide phenomenon with younger audiences and it took place on the other side of our galaxy with an alien, but told with heart and humanity.
“Imagine what a new Stargate series could do? Imagine where the Stargate could take us and the new worlds we could explore. The world is hungry for more great science-fiction and fantasy!”
The Stargate franchise originally kicked off with a feature film in 1994, and has since spawned multiple series and films. The new revival series was initially announced in November.
While confirming news of the cancellation, Stargate executive producer Joseph Mallozzi, who was on board as a consulting producer for the new series, said on X that Gero had developed a new Stargate series over two years, “ultimately crafting a show that offered a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon”.
He continued: “It was a series that avoided the pitfalls of several modern remakes and reboots by fully embracing the core of its predecessors: action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humour, and found family. And based on that creative vision, the new Stargate series was greenlit in November of 2025. As of today, officially, that original vision is no more.”
He added: “We’ll never get the opportunity to introduce you to that world and those characters – or reintroduce you to, and check in with, some familiar faces from the past. My heart breaks. For the incredibly talented writers who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life.
“For Martin who maintained an unwavering positive outlook throughout despite the challenges, and who always strove to make a show that would honour the fans while welcoming a new audiences. And for the long-suffering Stargate fandom who waited so long and came so close to getting a show they truly would have loved.”
