Filmmaker Suresh Triveni believes the rise of social media has undeniably influenced the way films are made and edited today, but he remains convinced that strong storytelling continues to be the foundation of good cinema. The director, who is currently awaiting the release of his upcoming Netflix comedy Maa Behen starring Madhuri Dixit, Triptii Dimri and content creator Dharna Durga, recently spoke about how changing audience habits are impacting filmmaking techniques.

Suresh Triveni admits editing patterns have changed due to social media: “Too early to say whether it is the right method”
In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Triveni reflected on the experience of directing comedy compared to more intense dramatic projects. Known for films and series that often explore emotionally layered narratives, the filmmaker admitted that comedy offers a comparatively lighter atmosphere on set. “Comedy sets are easier on the actor. As a director, I feel less guilty towards them,” he said.
Explaining his point further, Triveni added, “With dramas, I keep telling them to be intense throughout the day. Here, it is much lighter. One looks forward to shooting.”
The discussion also turned towards the growing influence of social media culture, including memes, viral moments and shrinking attention spans, on modern filmmaking. “We are still figuring it out. Of course, there is a change in technique. Not just in humour, but everywhere. If you see, the edit patterns are changing. Attention span is a constant conversation,” he said.
The filmmaker acknowledged that audience behaviour has evolved, but noted that he does not see viewers as separate from himself. “But I don’t look at the audience as some other beast. I am myself the audience. My attention span is also shorter. I’ll be wrong to say that patterns aren’t changing. But it’s too early to say whether it is the right method,” he explained.
While many filmmakers are attempting to adapt to shorter viewing habits, Triveni believes that capturing attention does not always require flashy techniques or constant innovation. “To gather attention, either you have to scream out loud, or you suck them in the first 15 minutes. Once you’re into the story, you’re not going to look at your phone,” he said.
Despite the growing emphasis on virality and quick engagement, Triveni remains a strong believer in traditional storytelling principles. “But yes, I always go back to the classic storytelling, which will never age. You can be clever and try winning here and there, but eventually, classic storytelling wins,” he added.
Maa Behen, starring Madhuri Dixit, Triptii Dimri and Dharna Durga, is set to premiere on Netflix on June 4.
