Political commentator and former Bigg Boss 13 contestant Tehseen Poonawalla has responded to online criticism around actor Salman Khan’s brief smile in the recently released teaser for Battle of Galwan, defending both the film and the performance. In a message shared on social media, Poonawalla argued the expression reflects controlled intensity and emotional strength, not casualness.

Salman Khan unveiled the teaser for Battle of Galwan on December 27, 2025, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Set against the backdrop of the 2020 clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley, the war drama quickly generated discussion online. While many praised the teaser’s patriotic tone, visuals and monologue, some social media users questioned a moment in which Salman’s character smiles — a reaction they felt was out of place in a serious, conflict-based narrative.

Addressing the criticism on X (formerly Twitter), Poonawalla said the detractors were misinterpreting the actor’s expression. “Those trolling Salman for that slight smile in the Battle Of Galwan teaser are missing the point,” he wrote. “That isn’t casual — it’s composure. It’s calm aggression. It’s the look of a soldier who understands what he’s walking into and refuses to panic when the enemy is right in front of him.”

Poonawalla also highlighted how the dialogues featured in the teaser help frame the emotional tone of the scene. “When a soldier steps onto the battlefield, there are only two outcomes: he either wins and protects his nation, or he sacrifices himself for it,” he added. “For a soldier… both are victory. And the teaser makes that mindset clear with those lines: ‘Jawaano yaad rahe, zakham lage toh medal samajhna aur maut dikhe toh salaam karna… Aaj nahi toh phir kabhi. Maut se kya darna, usse toh aana hi hai’. That smile isn’t weakness. It’s acceptance. It’s courage.”

Battle of Galwan, directed by Apoorva Lakhia, stars Salman Khan in the lead role as Colonel Bikkumalla Santosh Babu and also features Chitrangada Singh, Zeyn Shaw, Ankur Bhatia, Vipin Bhardwaj, Heera Sohal and Abhilash Chaudhary in supporting roles. The film is scheduled for release on April 17, 2026, and has been one of the most discussed projects in Khan’s filmography, given its subject matter and the actor’s return to large-scale, dramatic cinema.
