The WONDERfools ending explained: What happened to the Child of Eternity?

The WONDERfools ending explained: What happened to the Child of Eternity?

Posted on January 1, 1970May 15, 2026 By webseriesdownload No Comments on The WONDERfools ending explained: What happened to the Child of Eternity?

Netflix’s WONDERfools follows a group of misfits in 1999 Haeseong city who unexpectedly gain supernatural abilities and end up caught in a conspiracy connected to dangerous human experiments, mysterious disappearances and the fear surrounding the arrival of the new millennium.

The fantasy-comedy series stars Park Eun-bin as Eun Chae-ni, a chaotic young woman who suddenly discovers she cannot stay dead, Cha Eun-woo as Lee Un-jeong, a withdrawn City Hall employee hiding connections to the experiments, Choi Dae-hoon as Son Gyeong-hun, an unlucky florist with adhesive abilities, and Im Seong-jae as Kang Ro-bin, whose super strength grows alongside his emotions.

Across the season, the four unlikely heroes become entangled with the mysterious Wunderkinder, a group connected to dangerous experiments and strange abilities hidden beneath Haeseong.

As secrets about the city’s past begin resurfacing, the group finds themselves facing increasingly dangerous enemies while struggling to understand their own powers.

So, what exactly happened in WONDERfools finale? Here’s everything you need to know.

Spoilers ahead for WONDERfools season 1.

WONDERfools ending explained: What happened to the Child of Eternity?

The finale finally reveals the full truth about the tragedy that shaped almost every character in WONDERfools.

20 years earlier, Dr Ha Won-do conducted illegal human experiments on dozens of children in an attempt to create immortality. The children were exposed to chemicals and repeatedly tested inside a hidden facility connected to what would later become the Church of Eternal Salvation Prayer Hous.

Out of 72 children, many died during the experiments, while others developed abnormal side effects and supernatural abilities.

One child in particular became the centre of the experiments: the so-called Child of Eternity. Unlike the others, the child could repeatedly die and regenerate.

Won-do became obsessed with studying that ability. Flashbacks throughout the season reveal that the child was tortured inside the laboratory, repeatedly killed and revived while scientists monitored the body’s regenerative process.

Un-jeong, who was also one of the children trapped there, witnessed the experiments firsthand.

The laboratory was eventually destroyed in a massive fire after Un-jeong lost control of his powers while trying to save the Child of Eternity. Won-do was imprisoned afterwards, while surviving children either disappeared or were secretly taken away.

What are the Wunderkinder?

The Wunderkinder are the surviving children from Won-do’s experiments.

Although some developed supernatural abilities, the powers always came with dangerous physical side effects. Years later, Won-do reunited three surviving Wunderkinder children, Ju-ran, Ho-ran and Pal-ho, and used them to build the Church of Eternal Salvation Prayer House, which operated as both a religious cult and a cover for his continued experiments.

Using their abilities, the Wunderkinder manipulated followers into believing they were witnessing miracles.

Pal-ho, for example, used his gravity-based abilities to convince worshippers that the church could heal disabilities and save humanity before the apocalypse.

However, the finale makes clear that Won-do never truly cared about the children he experimented on.

To him, the Wunderkinder were simply failed products in his search for immortality.

Is the Child of Eternity still alive?

Technically, yes — but not in the way many characters initially believed.

Throughout the season, several characters assume that Chae-ni herself might secretly be the original Child of Eternity.

After the original laboratory incident, the Child of Eternity suffered catastrophic brain damage when debris crushed part of the skull during the fire.

Although the child’s body could regenerate physical wounds, the damaged brain tissue could not properly recover.

Madam King, Chae-ni’s grandma, and the remaining researchers then made a horrifying decision: the Child of Eternity’s heart was transplanted into young Chae-ni, who suffered from a severe heart condition.

That means the original child died, but the heart — and its regenerative abilities — survived inside Chae-ni.

This is also why Un-jeong becomes emotionally attached to Chae-ni after recognising similarities between her and the child he once tried to protect.

How did Chae-ni and her friends get powers?

Chae-ni’s abilities first fully activate after her apparent death in episode 1. While attempting a fake kidnapping scheme, Chae-ni suddenly dies from heart failure. Her friends panic and try to hide her body by dumping it near a contaminated reservoir connected to Won-do’s experiments.

After falling into the polluted water, Chae-ni unexpectedly returns to life. The same contamination also affects Son Gyeong-hun and Kang Ro-bin after they fall into the reservoir.

Soon afterwards, all three begin developing abilities.

Chae-ni gains teleportation powers connected to her heartbeat and emotional state. Moreover, the heart of eternity brings her back to life every time she dies.

Ro-bin develops immense strength and near invulnerability whenever his emotions intensify. Gyeong-hun gains adhesive abilities that allow him to stick himself to surfaces.

Meanwhile, Un-jeong already possessed powers because he was one of the original children experimented on by Won-do decades earlier.

What is Madam King’s connection to the experiments?

Madam King is far more connected to the experiments than Chae-ni initially realises. The finale confirms that Madam King financially supported Won-do’s research project 20 years earlier.

Although she did not personally conduct the experiments, she became tied to the project through her desperate attempt to save Chae-ni, who was terminally ill as a child.

After the laboratory incident, Madam King also helped rescue surviving children from the facility. However, characters like Ho-ran accuse her of abandoning the children who displayed powers while only protecting those who appeared normal.

Madam King herself carries deep guilt over what happened.

What was Dr Ha Won-do’s real plan?

The finale confirms that Won-do’s ambitions were never limited to simply recovering the Heart of Eternity from Chae-ni. During his confrontation with Un-jeong inside the underground laboratory, Won-do finally explains the true purpose behind the experiments.

According to Won-do, the original experiments were an attempt to create immortality. However, he eventually decided that humanity itself needed to evolve. His final plan involved spreading phenol throughout Haeseong city during the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The chemical contamination would either kill people, mutate them, or potentially awaken supernatural abilities in survivors.

Won-do believed that this would create a new species and a new world. In addition to likely finding more people with the heart of eternity. The Church of Eternal Salvation Prayer House was ultimately a way for him to gather money, followers and test subjects while preparing for that plan.

What happens to Ha Won-do’s children?

The finale ends tragically for Won-do’s children: Pal-ho, Ju-ran and Ho-ran.

Pal-ho dies first after the side effects caused by the experiments spread throughout his body. By the end, his skin begins hardening into a stone-like state before he collapses and dies.

Ju-ran becomes consumed by revenge after losing both Pal-ho and Won-do during the same night. Using her psychic manipulation abilities, she controls civilians, police officers and even Un-jeong himself in an attempt to finish Won-do’s plan.

In one of the finale’s most tragic moments, Ho-ran disguises herself as Chae-ni using her illusion abilities only to stab Un-jeong. Ju-ran, unaware, manipulates someone else into stabbing Ho-ran, whom she believed to be Chae-ni

Although Ho-ran, now in her normal appearance, is seriously injured, Un-jeong later confirms that she still has a pulse before they call an ambulance. She does not appear again after that.

However, after overusing her powers throughout the finale, Ju-ran eventually faints, it remains unclear whether she is alive or dead.

How do Chae-ni and her friends stop the attack?

After learning that Won-do plans to spread phenol across Haeseong city, Chae-ni, Un-jeong, Ro-bin and Gyeong-hun split up during the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Gyeong-hun eventually realises the chemical is hidden inside a massive airship floating above the city. While Un-jeong fights manipulated civilians and disciples under Ju-ran’s control, Ro-bin uses his strength to launch Chae-ni and Gyeong-hun high enough to reach the airship.

Gyeong-hun clings to the side of the aircraft using his adhesive abilities while Chae-ni climbs aboard. Once the airship begins exploding, Chae-ni teleports both herself and the aircraft away from Haeseong before the phenol can spread across the city.

The city is saved just as the year 2000 begins.

Is Chae-ni dead?

No. Although the finale initially makes it appear as though Chae-ni died while teleporting the exploding airship, she eventually returns alive.

49 days after her “death”, Madam King even prepares a memorial for her granddaughter. Chae-ni unexpectedly returns to the restaurant disguised in different clothes.

Madam King immediately recognises her, and the emotional reunion confirms that Chae-ni survived.

Un-jeong later arrives and hugs her as the four friends are finally reunited after saving the city.

What happens in the post-credits scene of WONDERfools?

The Wonderfools ends with a post-credits scene that suggests the story may not truly be over.

After the battle in Haeseong-si, Un-jeong finally reunites with his mother and returns to working at the City Hall Complaint Office.

Meanwhile, the authorities officially shut down the Church of Eternal Salvation Prayer House following the chaos caused during the New Year’s Eve attack.

However, deep beneath the destroyed underground laboratory, Dr Ha Won-do’s body is shown beginning to regenerate.

Despite suffering fatal injuries during the explosion caused by Un-jeong, his wounds slowly heal before he suddenly opens his eyes.
