Vipul Amrutlal Shah recently spoke about the themes explored in his upcoming film Governor and how certain present-day economic discussions reminded him of the backdrop of the project.

The filmmaker shared his thoughts on social media after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the importance of protecting the country’s economic stability amid ongoing global uncertainty. Reacting to the discussion, Vipul Shah said the concerns being highlighted today connect closely with the themes explored in Governor, which is inspired by events from the 1990s.

Speaking about the same, Vipul Shah said, “I completely agree with the concern expressed by our honourable Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. What may seem like simple suggestions being careful about fuel consumption or being mindful about gold purchases, are actually connected to protecting India’s economic stability and forex reserves.”

The filmmaker further explained how his upcoming film is set against the backdrop of India’s economic challenges during the Gulf War era. “Interestingly, my film Governor is also rooted in a very similar backdrop. The film is set in 1990, when the Gulf War shook India’s economy to such an extent that gold had to leave the country to stabilise the nation,” he said.

He also noted that the present global situation made the themes of the film feel particularly relevant today. “Today, with global fuel uncertainty and geopolitical tensions once again making headlines, it almost feels surreal to see certain realities mirroring the world and concerns explored in my film. Sometimes, patriotism is also about responsibility,” Vipul Shah added.

Backed by Sunshine Pictures and presented by Vipul Shah, Governor is inspired by historical events connected to one of India’s most challenging economic periods. The film stars Manoj Bajpayee in the role of the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

The project is directed by Chinmay Mandlekar and has already generated curiosity following the release of its teaser. The film is written by Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat, Ravi Asrani and Vipul Amrutlal Shah, with music composed by Amit Trivedi and lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar.

Governor is scheduled to release in theatres on June 12, 2026.
