The co-hosts looked set to be heading to extra-time in their last-32 tie against South Africa until Stephen Eustáquio hit a dramatic winner at the death to seal the nation’s first-ever World Cup knockout victory.
That match took place in Los Angeles and Jesse Marsch’s team continue to be denied home advantage as they meet Morocco at the Houston Stadium in Texas.
The Atlas Lions, who were unbeaten in the group stage, needed penalties to squeeze past the Netherlands in the previous round.
It seemed Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo’s second-half goal would fire the Dutch to victory until Fulham defender Issa Diop headed an equaliser at the death for Morocco.
The Africa Cup of Nations champions are the favourites to progress and the winners will meet Paraguay or France in the quarter-finals.
