Despite being one of the bookies’ leading fancies to lift the trophy, the European nation were surprisingly held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their opening match.
Roberto Martinez’s star-studded team failed to fashion many clear-cut chances and Cristiano Ronaldo was heavily criticised for a poor performance in attack.
There have been calls for Martinez to drop Ronaldo, although the 41-year-old is hoping to become the first player to score in six different World Cups, and he will fancy his chances of netting against an Uzbekistan that lost 3-1 to Colombia in their opener.
The tournament debutants scored their first goal courtesy of Abbosbek Fayzullaev’s second-half equaliser, but they failed to hold onto a point as Luis Diaz and Jaminton Campaz settled the contest.
